After four suicides at KAIST: ‘We aren’t happy’

Amid growing criticism of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) after four students committed suicide this year, including one yesterday, a KAIST student put a hand-written poster on a bulletin board at the campus in Daejeon yesterday, opposing the school policy that awards scholarships based on students’ grades.

The poster, titled “The real owner of KAIST is us, 4,000 students of the university,” says students are suffering from the tough policy.

“The president of KAIST should abolish the neoliberalism school policy that causes harsh competition among students by granting scholarships to students differently by their grades and prohibiting them from taking classes they failed once again.”

“If students fail to get good grades, they are labeled as losers,” it says. “No one has time to share their worries. We are not happy in this campus.”

The poster also criticizes standardized education at KAIST. “KAIST is promoting itself as encouraging the creativity and personality of students, but, in fact, the grades based on academic reports are the only standard to evaluate students in this university.”

A 25-year-old senior jumped from the 12th floor of an apartment building in southern Seoul on March 29, just nine days after a 19-year-old sophomore was found dead with a note next to him in Suwon, Gyeonggi. In January, a 19-year-old freshman took an overdose of sleeping pills. The student who died yesterday was a 19-year-old sophomore. He was found in front of an apartment in Incheon.

Some experts say the recent deaths are related to the new scholarship policy that KAIST President Suh Nam-pyo instituted in 2007, in which scholarships are only given to students who receive at least a 3.0 grade point average. Before that, all KAIST students received full scholarships.

On Monday, Suh, on the KAIST Web site, urged students to remain determined to survive, even prosper, in the competitive atmosphere.

“There’s nothing obtained for free,” Suh said in his post. “In inevitable competition, the ultimate resolution [to win the competition] depends on an attitude of mind. All people should accept the idea of ‘No one always wins and everyone can lose in a competition, but you can win later.’” Suh’s post angered some students. The students said Suh’s post implied the recent suicides were caused by the students’ mental weakness.
