UN forces stage rescue of Koreans in Ivory Coast

All of the five Korean officials at the Korean Embassy in Ivory Coast including the acting ambassador were rescued unharmed by UN forces yesterday after being isolated for eight days inside the embassy, according to the Korea’s Foreign Ministry.

Eight tanks and 10 jeeps from the UN peacekeeping forces were mobilized in the rescue operation and there was no exchange of gunfire, Foreign Ministry officials said.

The operation was finished in less than an hour by 6:50 p.m. Thursday local time (3:50 a.m. Friday in Korea), they said.

The rescue came after the Korean Embassy in Abidjan, located in hundreds of meters away from the presidential palace in the capital of the Western African country, was caught up in military confrontations between the country’s President Laurent Gbagbo and new President-elect Alassane Ouattara.

The staffs of the embassy, including eight locals, were isolated inside the embassy beginning April 1 due to intensified conflict between the two parties. The embassy was hit by gunfire and rockets on Thursday. The eight locals managed to get out earlier this week.

Meanwhile, 113 South Korean civilians, except for the embassy officials in Ivory Coast including 106 in Abidjan, all have been moved to a safer area patrolled by the French Army, ministry officials said. The five embassy officials, now moved to a safer place in Abidjan, will continue their duty of protecting the Korean citizens, they said.

Diplomatic posts of many other countries are also located around the Ivory Coast presidential palace including Indian, Chinese, Israeli, and Japan. On April 6, the Japanese Ambassador was rescued from the Japanese Embassy by the French soldiers.

대통령 선거 불복 사태에 따른 내전으로 고립됐던 코트디부아르 주재 한국대사관 직원들이 8일 모두 구출됐다. 외교통상부 당국자는 이날 “수도 아비장 시가지의 총격전이 격화된 1일부터 고립돼온 정성섭 대사 대리를 비롯한 한국인 직원 5명 모두 한국시간 오전 3시50분쯤 유엔 평화유지군의 구출작전으로 안전하게 탈출했다”고 밝혔다.

한국대사관은 대통령직 이양을 거부하고 있는 로랑 그바그보가 은신 중인 대통령궁과 불과 150m 떨어져 있다. 알라산 우아타라 당선인 측은 1일부터 본격적인 아비장 시가지 공격에 나섰다. 그 과정에서 한국 대사관 2층의 비서실은 로켓 포탄 공격에 박살났고, 건물 외벽 곳곳엔 총탄 자국이 생겼다. 대사관 직원들은 양측의 교전이 심해지며 밖으로 나갈 엄두를 내지 못했다. 총소리가 들릴 때면 1층 사무실의 책상 밑에 숨어야 했다. 이런 가운데 외교부는 주프랑스 한국대사관을 통해 프랑스 외교부 위기대응센터에 대사관 직원들의 신변 보호를 요청했다. 주변을 순찰하며 알맞은 때를 노리던 유엔 평화유지군과 프랑스군은 현지시간 7일 오후 장갑차 8대와 지프 10대, 중대 병력을 동원해 구출작전에 성공했다. 총격전이 멈춘 1시간 이내에 작전이 진행돼 교전은 없었다. 주코트디부아르 대사관의 신희용 영사는 “이틀 전 휴전이 끝나고 무장세력이 4시간 넘게 대사관 인근을 향해 계속 총을 쏠 때는 정말 힘들었다”며 “죽다가 살아난 느낌”이라고 말했다. 구출된 대사관 직원들은 프랑스군 주둔지 인근의 호텔에 숙소와 임시사무소를 확보해 업무를 계속하고 있다. 현재 코트디부아르에는 대사관 직원 외에 113명의 교민이 있다. 모두 프랑스군의 영향권 안에 있어 안전한 상태라고 한다.
