Worrying sub exercises seen in North: Sources

The North Korean military is conducting training on the Yellow Sea and East Sea, which could be infiltration exercises for additional attacks on the South, according to South Korean military sources.

The top commander of U.S. Forces Korea on Wednesday also expressed concerns about possible attacks by the North.

“They are being observed doing military exercises in their bases, including a submarine base in Bipagot, Nampo, mobilizing five or six submarines,” a military source told the JoongAng Ilbo on Wednesday.

Nampo is a city on the Yellow Sea near the Northern Limited Line, the de facto maritime inter-Korean border. The source said naval exercises were also observed in the East Sea.

“It is very rare that the North performs submarine military exercises in March, so we are keeping a close eye on them,” the source said.

According to some sources, the North also appears to be mobilizing new Shark-class 40-meter K-300 submarines in the exercises, in addition to older 35-meter submarines.

The North Korean military was also observed moving air-cushioned vehicles, or hovercrafts, to a nearly completed air-cushioned vehicles base in Koampo, located opposite Baengnyeong Island, one of the five South Korean islands near the NLL, another military source said.

The Koampo base is being watched closely by the South Korean military in case it is used for a surprise attack in the area of the five islands. The base is 70 percent complete and is expected to be finished in June.

North Korea’s Kongbang-class hovercrafts will be able to reach the five western islands in 30 minutes from the base.

Gen. Walter Sharp, commander of the 28,500-strong U.S. Forces Korea, echoed the South’s worries about an attack while speaking at a U.S. House Armed Services Committee hearing.

“As North Korea works through the succession that they are ongoing now, as North Korea tries to become, as Kim Jong-il has claimed, to be a great and powerful nation in 2012, I do worry that there are additional attacks and provocations that are being considered within North Korea,” Sharp said. He referred to leader Kim Jong-il’s ongoing attempts to elevate his third son Jong-un as his replacement after he dies.

“I think Kim Jong-il focuses on regime survival under any terms and counts on his continued development of nuclear capability and these provocative acts in order to be able to have his regime survive,” he said.

북한 잠수함이 수상하다

신형 5~6척 이례적 3월 훈련
고암포엔 공기부양정 이동 배치
샤프 “북, 추가 도발할 수도”

해빙기를 맞아 북한 해군의 움직임이 심상치 않다. 북한 군이 서해 북방한계선(NLL) 북방 해군 잠수함 기지와 동해에서 해상 침투 기동 훈련을 강화하고, 완공 단계에 들어간 서해 백령도 맞은편 고암포 공기부양정 기지로 부양정을 이동 배치하는 모습이 우리 정부 당국에 포착됐다. 군 소식통은 6일 “남포의 비파곶 잠수함 기지 등에서 잠수함 5~6척씩을 동원해 기동 훈련을 하고 있다”고 전했다. 소식통은 “3월에 잠수함 기동 훈련을 강화한 것은 이례적이어서 정밀 감시하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

북한은 특히 기존에 운용해온 길이 35ｍ 상어급(325t) 잠수함 외에 최근 작전 배치한 길이 40m 규모의 신형 상어급 잠수함(K-300)도 훈련에 동원하고 있는 것으로 알려졌다.

천안함 폭침 이후 북한의 서해 5도 기습 침범 우려가 높아지면서 군이 주시하고 있는 곳이 6월 완공 예정인 서해 고암포 기지다. 정부 소식통은 “평안북도 다사리 공기부양정 기지 내 공기부양정을 고암포로 옮기고 있다”고 말했다. 고암포 기지 기반 시설은 현재 70% 정도 완공됐으며, 돔 형식의 격납고 70여 개 중 30여 개를 완성한 것으로 알려졌다. 북한군이 주력 공기부양정인 ‘공방Ⅱ’(35t급)나 ‘공방Ⅲ’(20t급)를 이용해 공격해올 경우 30분이면 백령도 등 서해 5도에 도달할 수 있다. 공기부양정의 초기 기동 모습은 백령도에서 관측하기 어려워 더욱 위협적이란 분석도 있다.

한편 월터 샤프 주한 미군사령관은 6일(현지시간) 미 하원 군사위원회 청문회에서 “북한이 추가 공격과 도발을 고려할 수 있다는 점을 우려하고 있다”며 “북한의 도발을 억지하도록 대비해야 하고 억지력이 작동하지 않을 경우에는 이에 대응할 준비를 해야 한다”고 밝혔다.
