As elections near, efforts intensify

With neck-and-neck races predicted for the April 27 by-elections, the Grand National Party and the Democratic Party are intensifying efforts to woo voters based on the latest opinion polls.

“The races are still unpredictable. We could win three or zero,” said Won Hee-ryong, secretary-general of the Grand National Party.

Three vacancies in the National Assembly will be filled and a new Gangwon governor will be selected on April 27. The GNP did not field candidates in Suncheon, South Jeolla, a traditional stronghold of the Democrats.

In the Gangwon gubernatorial race, the GNP’s Ohm Ki-young, a former MBC president, will fight against the DP’s Choi Moon-soon, Ohm’s predecessor at MBC. According to a poll conducted on Thursday by the Youido Institute, the party’s think tank, Ohm was ahead of Choi by more than 10 percentage points, with Ohm at 52 percent and Choi at 41 percent.

The survey also showed an optimistic development in the neck-and-neck race in Bundang B District, where Kang Jae-sup, a former GNP chairman, will fight against Sohn Hak-kyu, the DP’s incumbent chairman. Kang led in previous polls within the margin of error, but on Thursday he was ahead of Sohn by 7.4 percentage points, for the first time a total larger than the margin of error, the GNP said.

In an earlier poll by the Dong-A Ilbo, Kang was at 44.3 percent while Sohn had 42.7 percent. A JoongAng Ilbo poll, conducted on April 1 and 2, showed that 34.3 percent of Bundang voters supported Kang while 31.3 percent backed Sohn.

In Gimhae B District, Kim Tae-ho, former South Gyeongsang governor and former prime minister-designate, is running as the GNP candidate, while the DP and the People’s Participation Party are trying to consolidate their candidates to unite the liberal votes.

Kwak Jin-eob of the DP and Lee Bong-su of the PPP are currently competing with each other in a primary, and the final decision will come out tomorrow. According to a March 31 survey by Sisa Journal, Kim was ahead of both the DP’s Kwak and the PPP’s Lee by narrow margins.

The Democrats also admitted that the races are hard to predict. “There is no place we feel safe, nor is there a place we are willing to concede,” said DP Secretary-General Lee Nak-yon.

“The key is improving voter turnout for voters in their 30s and 40s,” DP spokeswoman Cha Young said of the Bundang B race and Sohn’s chances.

The Democrats are also trying to narrow the gap in the Gangwon gubernatorial race by promoting Choi’s ancestral ties to Gangneung.

원희룡 사무총장27일 재·보궐선거가 실시되는 경기도 성남 분당을, 강원도지사, 경남 김해을 지역에선 어떤 결과가 나올까. 한나라당 원희룡 사무총장은 10일 “3대 0 전승(全勝)이 될 수도 있고, 0대 3 전패(全敗)가 될 수도 있다”고 말했다.

민주당 이낙연 사무총장은 “쉽게 질 곳도 없지만, 안심할 수 있는 곳도 없다”고 했다. 양당이 똑같은 진단을 하고 있는 셈이다.

　원 총장은 ‘전승 아니면 전패’의 근거로 민주당 손학규 대표의 출현을 들었다. “여당에 대한 바닥 표심이 매우 안 좋긴 하지만 민주당이 ‘대선 전초전’으로 선거를 끌고 가자 여당 지지층이 결집하고 있다”고 했다. 그러면서 “성남 분당을 보궐선거에 손 대표가 나오자 선거를 관망하던 박근혜 전 대표의 지지자들이 자발적으로 결집하고 있다. 박 전 대표를 지지하는 미래희망연대(옛 친박연대)의 지역 조직과 국민희망포럼 같은 지지자 모임들이 집단적으로 나서는 움직임이 뚜렷하다”고 말했다.

　성남 분당을에 대한 한나라당 여의도연구소의 7일 조사 결과 한나라당 강재섭 후보 49.9%, 손학규 후보 42.5%로 나타났다는 게 한나라당 주장이다. 하지만 한나라당 조사에서도 두 사람의 격차는 갈수록 줄어들고 있다고 한다.

　강원도지사 선거의 경우 한나라당 엄기영 후보(52%)가 민주당 최문순 후보(41%)에 비해 10%포인트 이상 앞섰다는 게 여의도연구소 조사 결과라고 하지만 이곳 역시 격차는 크게 좁혀졌다고 한나라당 당직자는 말했다. 김해을에 대한 외부 기관의 조사 결과는 야권 단일후보와의 가상대결에서 한나라당 김태호 후보가 뒤지는 걸로 나왔다. 당에선 “격차가 오차범위 안에 있는 만큼 해볼 만하다”고 주장한다.

　민주당은 “성남 분당을에서 손 대표가 조금 뒤지고 있다”고 하면서도 “맹추격하고 있는 만큼 20~40대 직장인들이 대거 투표를 하면 이길 수 있다”고 말한다. 김해을의 경우 민주당 곽진업 후보와 국민참여당 이봉수 후보 중 한 명이 여론조사 경선(12일 결과 발표)으로 단일후보가 되면 거의 100% 당선될 걸로 본다. 이곳에선 친노무현 그룹의 핵심인 문재인 노무현재단 이사장도 야권 후보를 지원하고 있다. 강원도의 경우 최문순 후보가 지난달 여론조사에서 20%포인트 이상 벌어졌던 격차를 대폭 줄인 만큼 역전승도 가능하다는 게 민주당의 기대다.
