A payback for foreigners who fought for Korea
Alpozel Trugut, a 21-year-old Turk, visited the War Memorial of Korea in Yongsan, central Seoul, last Wednesday to carry out his grandfather’s wish: collect some soil from the memorial where his long-gone war buddy is honored.
Trugut’s grandfather, Irfan Gulen, 80, fought during the Korean War in 1952 near Yongin, Gyeonggi, as did Gulen’s friend Tevfik Arpaci, who was killed in action. Arpaci’s remains are buried at the UN Memorial Cemetery in Busan.
“I can sense my grandfather and his friend’s feelings of fighting for a country 10,000 kilometers [6,200 miles] away from their home 60 years ago,” Trugut said as he touched the engraved name of his grandfather’s friend at the war monument.
Trugut is one of 22 grandchildren of foreign veterans who fought in the Korean War who have come to Korea to attend Hankuk University of Foreign Studies.
The university announced last week that it is providing educational opportunities for these descendants to show the country’s gratitude. The school will cover tuition and housing fees until they graduate.
Starting last Friday, the 22 students began participating in an 11-month Korean language course at the Easy Korea Academy and will start attending Hankuk University of Foreign Studies next year. They were admitted through the university’s admission program for foreigners.
This isn’t Trugut’s first time in Korea. He has been studying taekwondo since he was 12 and in 2009, he visited Korea to compete in a Taekwondo expo in Muju, North Jeolla. During his two-week visit, Trugut said he was impressed by his the land of his “blood brothers.” He decided to transfer from the college he was attending and moved to Korea last October.
“From what I heard from my grandfather, Korea was a country struggling in starvation,” Trugut said. “But after he visited Korea in 2002 during the World Cup to participate in a Korean War veterans’ invitational program, he was shocked to see how developed the country was.”
Even though Trugut likes Korea, he considered returning to Turkey because tuition for a Korean language school he was attending were too expensive. Thanks to the Korean government program, Trugut can now attend university without worrying about tuition.
Trugut plans to attend the department of sports and leisure after he finishes the language program.
“When I first decided to study in Korea, my parents insisted that I not to go to Seoul, as it is such a high-priced city, but my grandfather was on my side, saying that ‘the country that I used to fight for must have a reason for such rapid development,’” Trugut said. “When he heard the news that I’ll be attending university under the scholarship program, he said he was so happy that ‘the country that once received aid now provides it.’”

(TEVFIK ARPACI)’.
