Man’s greed gets the best of him: He gets nabbed

One man’s fabricated scenario to make off with 700 million won ($647,000) out of 2.7 billion won he was watching for a relative ended up with him losing the entire lot to the police.

In April 2009, Lee, a 53-year-old living in Jeonju, North Jeolla, with no occupation was asked by his brother-in-law who was being investigated by the police to keep 2.7 billion won in tainted money. The brother-in-law went to jail that November for setting up and running an Internet gambling Web site from 2008 through 2009. The money was from the Website’s profits.

Lee was at first loyal to his brother-in-law’s request. After thinking of ways to store the money without getting caught by the police, Lee decided to bury the money in a field located in a relatively secluded area in seven large plastic containers used to store kimchi. Each container carried 300 to 400 million won in 50,000 won bills.

Five containers were buried near an apricot tree on the field that belonged to Lee, and two were buried under a pine tree.

Lee told the police that he had first kept the money at his home in Jeonju but he grew “too nervous” and buried the money deep underground after buying a plot of land in the countryside in Gimje, North Jeolla, which he had eyed before “for its beautiful surroundings.”

In time, Lee’s greed grew. He dug out the five containers under the apricot tree and reburied four under the pine tree in the field, taking one container home for personal use. However, Lee grew uneasy as his brother-in-law’s release date loomed closer, which falls next month. He decided to blame his contractor Ahn, 52, who had worked on his field.

Lee asked whether Ahn had seen 1.7 billion won he had buried in the field and Ahn, fearing that he would be accused as a thief, called the police. As a police investigation started, Lee panicked and dug out three containers. Two he gave to his son while one was buried in a neighboring rice paddy.

“I thought if the police found the one container they would end their investigation,” Lee had told police. However, authorities found his story suspicious and Lee confessed to using 400 million won out of the stored 2.7 billion won.

Lee has been arrested and the remaining 2.4 billion won was recovered and will be turned over to the national treasury, police said.

지난 8일 중장비 기사 안모(52·전북 김제시 금구면)씨는 “땡전 한 푼 못 봤는데 도둑놈으로 몰려 억울하다”며 경찰에 신고했다. 안씨는 지난 2월에 이모(53)씨의 밭에서 매화 나무를 옮기는 작업을 했다. 그런데 작업 후에 이씨가 “밭에 묻어 둔 돈 4억원을 가져가지 않았느냐”며 안씨를 추궁했다. 도둑으로 몰린 안씨가 견디다 못해 경찰에 신고한 것이다. <본지 4월 9일자 19면>

　경찰이 수사에 나섰다. 경찰은 이씨의 진술이 오락가락하는 점을 이상하게 여겨 집중 추궁했다. 그 결과 이씨의 처남 이모(44·수감 중)씨가 불법 인터넷 도박 사이트를 운영해 챙긴 돈을 매형인 이씨에게 맡겼고, 이씨가 이 돈을 자신의 밭에 묻었다가 일부 꺼내 사용한 것으로 드러났다. 처남 이씨는 2009년 4월에 매형에게 돈을 보관해달라고 부탁했다. 처남은 그해 11월 도박장을 개장한 혐의로 구속됐다. 그는 1년6개월의 형을 선고받고 수감됐으며, 다음달 출소 예정이다. 뭉칫돈을 어떻게 숨길지 고민한 이씨는 김치냉장고 통 수십 개를 구입했다. 돈을 5만원권으로 바꿔 통 하나에 3억~4억원씩 담았다. 이 통을 금구면에 있는 자신의 마늘밭에 묻었다.

　욕심이 생긴 이씨는 지난 2일 밭에서 김치통 1개를 꺼내 통 속에 든 4억원 중 2억9000만원을 썼다. 하지만 처남의 출소일이 다가오자 이씨는 걱정에 잠을 이룰 수 없었다. 이씨는 고민 끝에 지난 2월 자신의 밭에서 일했던 중장비 기사 안씨를 떠올렸다. 당시 안씨는 매화 나무를 옮기는 작업을 했다. 돈을 도난당한 것처럼 꾸며 안씨에게 책임을 떠넘기는 계략을 짰다. 이씨는 “충남 조직폭력배 자금을 밭에 묻었는데 없어졌다. 작업 중 보지 못했느냐”고 안씨를 추궁했다. 안씨는 견디다 못해 “이씨가 나를 도둑놈으로 몬다”며 경찰에 신고했다.

　경찰은 신고를 받은 후 곧바로 밭 주변을 수색해 비닐로 싸인 통에서 3억원을 발견했다. 경찰은 갑작스러운 거액 발견 후 진술이 석연치 않은 이씨와 이씨 가족들을 추궁해 9일 새벽 이씨 아들(25)의 렌터카에서 10억원을, 아파트 금고에서 1억1500만원을 추가로 찾아냈다. 이씨는 결국 자신의 자작극이라고 실토할 수밖에 없었다. 경찰은 포클레인을 동원해 밭을 팠다. 처음에는 17개의 김치통이 발견됐다. 27억원이었다. 여기서 그치지 않았다. 파면 팔수록 김치통이 계속 나왔다. 밤늦게까지 작업한 결과 70억원 정도의 돈을 찾았다. 경찰 관계자는 “아침이면 돈이 100억원 가까이 될 듯하다”고 말했다. 경찰은 이씨를 범죄수익은닉 규제 등에 관한 법률 위반 혐의로 체포하고 남은 돈을 압수해 국고에 넘기기로 했다.
