N. Zealand event to aid quake fund

Hoping to raise funds for people suffering from the devastating earthquake that hit Christchurch, New Zealand, in February, and to promote the Rugby World Cup, which will be held in New Zealand in September, both the New Zealand and Australian Chambers of Commerce in Korea will hold a charity dinner at 6:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Grand Hyatt hotel in central Seoul.

“It is the first time the chambers will hold a fund-raising event related to rugby,” said Na Jin-seon, an event promotion coordinator in charge of managing the dinner.

Organizers expect about 150 people to attend the event, including the New Zealand and Australian ambassadors. Funds will go the government-sanctioned Christchurch Earthquake Relief Fund.

As part of the event, two rugby legends - Sean Fitzpatrick, an official New Zealand ambassador for the Rugby World Cup, and former All Black captain Eddie Jones - will visit Seoul and meet with Korean rugby players.

“The two legends will visit the Korea University Seoul campus to meet with a leading rugby team in Korea and the foreign community rugby club, the Seoul Survivors, and offer coaching tips,” Na said.

At the dinner, the two will deliver speeches about the upcoming New Zealand World Cup and sign autographs and memorabilia. SsangYong Paper, a Korean company, provided donations for the dinner, Na said. The dinner will also include a benefit auction.
