Korea, Japan to discuss nuclear crisis in meeting

Nuclear experts from Korea and Japan will meet today and tomorrow in Tokyo to discuss safety issues related to the crisis at the crippled Fukushima Daiichi plant in northeast Japan, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade said yesterday.

It will be the first time experts from the two countries will meet to exchange ideas since the crisis flared a month ago following a massive earthquake and tsunami.

Tokyo suggested the meeting last week after Seoul complained that Japan was not providing enough information about a crisis that could affect the safety of its people.

Ministry officials said the meeting will focus on safety management at the plant, measurement and monitoring of radiation from the plant and prevention of food contamination.

Six researchers from the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety and the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute will attend the meeting, accompanied by officials from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Korean Embassy in Tokyo.

Participating from Japan are representatives from the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization, the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute and officials from Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology.

With persistent fears about radioactive contamination in neighboring countries, Seoul last week proposed joint monitoring of radioactivity from the plant by Korean, Chinese and Russian researchers.

Seoul has also expressed a desire to send its own experts to the plant. But whether that will be possible will be determined after the meetings today and tomorrow, Seoul officials said.

Meanwhile, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters yesterday that the possibility of the situation at the plant deteriorating is becoming “significantly smaller.”
