Julia Gillard

Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will visit Korea later this month for talks with President Lee Myung-bak on bolstering security and economic and cultural cooperation, the Blue House said yesterday.

During the April 23-25 visit, Gillard will also attend a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of a fierce Korean War battle in which Australian forces fought off Chinese troops, will visit the border village of Panmunjom and will meet with veterans of the 1950-53 conflict, the office said.

In the summit on April 25, the two leaders will “discuss ways to promote substantial cooperation in security, economy and trade, resources and energy, and cultural and human exchanges between the two countries,” the office said in a statement.

The leaders will also discuss how to increase cooperation in international forums such as the G-20, the East Asia Summit and Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation, the office said. Gillard will hold a dinner meeting with local business leaders to talk about promoting economic cooperation and trade, the office said.

Gillard last visited Korea in November to attend the Seoul G-20 Summit and hold a bilateral meeting with Lee. Lee visited Australia in 2009.

Australia was one of 16 countries that fought in the Korean War alongside South Korea against invading North Korean troops and their Chinese supporters.

The Korean War ended in a truce in 1953.

South Korea and Australia forged diplomatic relations in 1961. The two countries designated this year the Korea-Australia Year of Friendship to commemorate the 50th anniversary of relations between the two countries.

Bilateral trade volume between the two countries amounted to $27 billion last year.

Korea, which imports a third of its total mineral resources from Australia, is the third largest export market for the country.
