Prosecutors raid offices of Kumho petro unit

The prosecution has launched an investigation into Kumho Petrochemical Company, accused of raising billions of won in slush funds, officials said yesterday.

About 20 investigators raided the headquarters of the petrochemical unit of Kumho Asiana Group in central Seoul yesterday at 9 a.m. and confiscated accounting documents and computer drives from the office, said officials at Seoul Southern District Prosecutors’ Office.

The prosecutors also combed the offices of the company’s affiliates and clients.

The investigators searched the headquarters until 1:44 p.m., confiscating 14 boxes of accounting documents and computer hard-drive disks.

An official said investigators have not yet determined who exactly was involved in raising the slush funds. “The investigation is in its early stages,” the official said.

Prosecutors believe the company raised slush funds by methods such as overpaying subcontractors and getting money back from them.

Prosecutors are also investigating whether the chairman of Kumho Petrochemical Company, Park Chan-koo, or other heads of contractor companies were involved in the scheme.

Park returned as chairman in March of last year after resigning following quarrels over control of the company with his older brother, Park Sam-koo, in 2009.

Park Chan-koo has been running the company under a separate management system with the Kumho Asiana Group ever since.

Taken aback by the raid, Kumho Petrochemical Company is trying to determine the cause of the investigation and how it started.

Chairman Park was at a conference for the International Institute of Synthetic Rubber Producers at the Grand Hyatt Seoul at the time of the raid.

According to Yonhap, an official from Kumho Petrochemical Company said, “We are taken aback as the prosecutors raided while we were participating in an event.”

The official added that “we have been seeing positive business showings recently and the company’s financial statements are clean. We have no reason to engage in raising slush funds.”

금호석유화학 비자금 의혹 압수수색
검찰, 본사·계열사·거래처 조사
검찰이 금호석유화학의 비자금 조성 의혹에 대한 수사에 나섰다.

　서울남부지검 형사6부(부장 차맹기)는 12일 서울 종로구 신문로에 있는 금호석유화학 본사와 계열사, 금호P앤B화학 관련 거래처 및 거래처 대표의 자택 등 여러 곳을 압수수색했다. 본사 압수수색은 전략경영본부 역할을 하는 회장 부속실과 자금·회계부서, 인사팀, 총무팀 등에서 실시됐다.

　검찰은 이날 오전 9시 금호석유화학 본사로 수사관 20여 명을 보내 본사가 입주해 있는 금호아시아나 건물 22~24층을 압수수색했다. 5시간 가까이 진행된 압수수색에서 박스 14개 분량의 회계장부와 회계파일이 저장된 컴퓨터 하드디스크를 확보해 분석 중이다. 남부지검 관계자는 “금호석유화학이 비자금 수십억원을 조성해 횡령했다는 단서를 확보해 압수수색에 나섰다”며 “수사 초기 단계라 비자금을 누가 어떻게 조성했는지는 확인해 주기 어렵다”고 밝혔다.

　검찰은 금호석유화학이 하청업체 등과 거래하는 과정에서 비용을 과다 지급한 뒤 차액을 돌려받거나 세금계산서를 허위로 발행하는 방법으로 비자금을 조성했을 것으로 보고 수사 중인 것으로 알려졌다. 또 비자금 조성이 박찬구 회장이나 거래업체 대표와 관련 있는지 여부도 집중조사하고 있는 것으로 전해졌다.

　박 회장은 2009년 형제간 경영권 다툼으로 물러났다가 지난해 3월 경영 일선에 복귀했다. 형인 박삼구 회장이 이끄는 금호아시아나그룹과 분리작업을 본격화하며 경영 정상화에 박차를 가했다. 지난해 자동차와 타이어산업이 호황을 맞으면서 영업이익이 3635억원으로 사상 최대를 기록했다.

　회사 측은 압수수색에 당황스럽다는 반응을 보였다. 압수수색 당시 박 회장은 서울 그랜드하얏트호텔에서 열린 세계합성고무생산자협회(IISRP)에 참석 중이었다. 금호석유화학 관계자는 “행사가 열리는 도중에 압수수색을 받아 당황스럽다”며 “최근 영업실적도 좋아지고 회사 재무상태도 굉장히 건전하다. 비자금을 조성할 이유가 없다”고 했다.
