Hwangbo fights to revive FC Seoul

Since the start of the K-League season, FC Seoul head coach Hwangbo Kwan has been under pressure to repeat last year’s K-League and K-League Cup victories.

Fans thought he would have little trouble, particularly because the team has some of the best foreign players in the league including Dejan Damjanovic, Adilson dos Santos, Server Djeparov and Mauricio Molina. But Hwangbo has yet to impress. And the club is currently sitting in 12th place in the league.

A few hot-tempered fans have already called for Hwangbo’s head, but the 46-year-old has managed to hold onto his job because the team had been faring well in the AFC Champions League, where they had two wins and one tie. That came to an end on Tuesday when FC Seoul lost to Nagoya Grampus 2-0 at home.

It was a shocking result because most people thought Hwangbo wouldn’t lose to a Japanese club since he had spent more than dozen years in Japan as a player, coach and front office executive. For Hwangbo, the loss was a sign that his job may no longer be safe. To keep his job, football experts say that he needs to find a way to utilize Damjanovic, the leading scorer, and Molina, last year’s Champions League MVP.

Hwangbo has acknowledged that making strategic use of the two players is a critical task and he said after Tuesday’s game that he would continue to work on it.

Both have racked up decent numbers in goals and assists. Damjanovic has scored four goals and two assists. Molina has two goals and one assist in 10 games, but his numbers are lower than last year.

Yet the numbers don’t reflect how they play on the pitch. Football experts claim that the biggest problem the two players face is staying in position, instead of moving around to fill other positions.

To solve the problem, the experts suggest that Hwangbo benchmark last season’s Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma, where Molina played with Dzenan Radoncic, a Montenegrin forward who has a similar playing style as Damjanovic.

Seongnam head coach Shin Tae-yong has said he struggled with the same problem, but that the key is to let players change position freely throughout the game.

“It’s not only Molina and the striker. It’s the two wingers, too,” Shin said to Ilgan Sports. “The attackers should be free to switch positions.”

Shin added that Hwangbo needs stricter discipline for the foreign players, including Molina.

“Molina is a professional player who usually does his job well, but sometimes coaches need to be strict,” Shin said. “You can’t give him special treatment just because he’s a foreign player.”

FC Seoul may be able to use Shin’s tactic when winger Choi Tae-uk returns to the lineup later this month after an injury sidelined him in February. Choi makes broad use of the pitch and observers believe he will give more tactical options to the team.

Hwangbo said that he will do his best against Gwangju FC on Saturday but if he doesn’t find a way to make better use of Damjanovic and Molina it may not be enough.

FC 서울, ‘구슬이 서 말인데 왜 꿰지를 못하니?’

FC 서울의 고민이 깊어 간다. 구슬은 서 말인데 꿰지 못 해 보배로 활용을 못 하고 있다. 특급 공격수 데얀과 몰리나의 활용법 문제다.

황보관 감독은 19일 아시아축구연맹(AFC) 챔피언스리그 F조 4라운드 나고야 그램퍼스와 경기에서 0-2로 패한 뒤 "경기내용은 좋았다"고 자위했다. 하지만 데얀과 몰리나의 활용법에 대한 질문이 나오자 낯빛이 어두워졌다. 그는 "몰리나와 데얀의 호흡 문제는 앞으로 해결해야 할 과제"라고 밝혔다.

K-리그 6라운드, 그리고 챔피언스리그 조별리그 4라운드까지 10경기를 치렀지만 시즌 초부터 제기된 둘의 호흡 문제는 해결될 기미가 보이지 않는다. 데얀은 올시즌 4골 2도움(K-리그·챔피언스리그 포함), 몰리나는 2골 1도움을 기록 중이다.

둘 다 수치상으로 나쁘지 않다. 특히 슬로스타터 이미지가 강한 데얀의 기록은 예년보다 낫다. 하지만 올시즌 성남에서 이적한 몰리나는 지난 시즌 활약에 비해 빛이 바랜 모습이다. 몰리나는 지난 시즌 같은 기간 5골 1도움으로 맹활약했다.

FC 서울이 올시즌 챔피언스리그 우승을 위해 몰리나를 야심차게 데려왔지만 최전방에서 데얀과 역할이 겹쳐 둘 다 100% 기량을 발휘하지 못 하는 양상이다. 19일 나고야와 경기도 그랬다. 최전방 투톱으로 포진한 둘은 유기적인 위치변경에 실패했다. 상대 문전에 고착돼 서로의 공간을 침범하고 있었다. 양측면 미드필더들 역시 위치에 고착돼 있었다. 황보관 감독은 "데얀과 몰리나 문제는 역할분담으로 해결해야 한다. 두 선수와 지속적으로 의견을 나누고 있다"고 했지만 여전히 공격의 실타래는 얽혀 있다.

그렇다면 지난 시즌 펄펄 날았던 성남에서는 어땠을까. 신태용 성남 감독은 '위치 파괴'로 문제를 해결했다. 성남에도 데얀 못지 않은 라돈치치가 최전방에 버티고 있다. 신태용 감독에게도 몰리나와 라돈치치의 호흡은 골치 아픈 문제였다.

신 감독은 "몰리나와 라돈치치의 역할 분담은 둘 만의 문제가 아니다. 측면 미드필더까지 고려해야 한다. 나는 몰리나와 라돈치치, 그리고 측면의 송호영과 조재철의 위치를 고정시키지 않았다. 측면에서 파고들면 투톱이 윙으로 물러서고, 투톱이 사이드로 빠지면 측면에서 빠져들어오는 방식"이라고 말했다.

그는 이어 "몰리나는 프로의식이 강해 스스로 잘 하는 선수다. 하지만 때로는 감독이 강제할 때가 있어야 한다. 외국인 선수라고 너무 풀어주면 안 된다. 외국인 선수가 잘 못해도 그 앞의 과정에서 한국 선수가 나빴다며 질책하면 팀 사기가 떨어진다"고 덧붙였다.

신 감독의 몰리나 활용법은 조광래 대표팀 감독의 전술과 맥이 닿는다. 조 감독은 아시안컵 때 원톱(지동원)과 사이드 공격수(박지성·이청용), 그리고 처진 스트라이커(구자철)의 위치를 지정하지 않았다. 자유롭게 위치를 이동하게 되면서 2선에 있던 구자철의 득점이 늘어났다.

이런 의미에서 부상에서 돌아오는 최태욱(서울)의 합류는 반갑다. 측면 공격수이지만 활동폭이 넓은 최태욱이 돌아오면 위치변경이 한층 무난해진다. 황보관 감독은 19일 "다음 경기(24일 광주전) 때 제대로된 경기를 보이겠다"고 선언했다. 그의 선택이 궁금해진다.
