Record producer Kim Young-il fell in love with traditional Korean music when on assignment as a photographer. By Byun Seon-gu

Kim Young-il is pretty jovial for a person who introduces himself as someone whose business is “destined to go bust.”

The 49-year-old is CEO of the gukak (traditional Korean music) record company AkdangEban, Inc., whose sales average around 30 albums per year - 20 for sanjo (a solo genre and one of the most advanced forms in Korean music) and 10 for pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing) albums.

Yet none of that bothers him. He says he’s just doing “a job he wanted to do so much it was painful.”

Kim got his start in the visual arts as a photography major at ChungAng University, where he was one of the school’s most sought-after photographers.

In 1994, his life changed when he was hired to photograph 28 Korean musicians.

“When I was asked to do a shoot for pansori master Chae Soo-jeong, I asked her to sing so I could get a more natural shot,” he said. “And she sang “Pyeonsichun,” a song about spring and the transience of life. I was so mesmerized that I couldn’t even snap the shutter. Before that moment I had turned my back on gugak but that moment changed everything.”

Kim spent the next few years searching for Korean traditional musicians, traveling all around the nation to document their work. The more he traveled, the more he began to fear that the music was disappearing.

“I would stay up at night listening to pansori by singers on Mount Jiri,” he said. “Then one day I suggested that we record the music but no one really thought it was a good idea. ‘Who would buy and listen to traditional Korean music now?’ they said.”

He went ahead with the project anyway and made 300 recordings by 150 pansori masters in 10 years but couldn’t find a record company willing to release the albums. So he set up AkdangEban, Inc. himself.

His preferred recording environment is in a hanok (traditional Korean house) and he now travels all around the nation to do recordings in a variety of hanok, which he believes are ideal spaces for traditional music.

“Korean traditional music was originally created in hanok. The music and instruments are naturally attuned to hanok. The humidity of the village and the lay of the land give each house different vibrations,” he said. “When doing a gayageum sanjo recording at Soswewon in Damyang, South Jeolla, we were able to capture the sound of the wind and when we were doing a gayageum recording at a hanok in Hamyang, South Gyeongsang, the chirping of birds enveloped the gayageum playing. But I didn’t do anything to change it. From the perspective of nature, humans are the noise.”

Thus far, he has recorded the sounds of 40 hanok and is trusted by some of the nation’s most famous traditional musicians.

Renowned gayageum player Hwang Byung-ki has said that Kim is an “enormously unique and essential being in Korean traditional music” who pursues the “sheer beauty of gugak.”

Kim seems flattered yet modest about his role in traditional music preservation.

“I cannot bear something to disappear,” he said. “That’s why I took pictures - to keep what I see. I also feel thrilled by recording and releasing music.”
