MLB to control Dodgers’ operations

LOS ANGELES - Major League Baseball, in an extraordinary move, plans to take control of the day-to-day operations of the Los Angeles Dodgers because of mounting concern over the franchise’s financial plight.

Dodgers owner Frank McCourt, who is locked in a bitter divorce battle that many expect will result in the storied team’s sale, reportedly took a personal loan from Fox Broadcasting Company last week to cover the Dodgers’ payroll.

“I informed Los Angeles Dodgers owner Frank McCourt today that I will appoint a representative to oversee all aspects of the business and the day-to-day operations of the club,” MLB Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement Wednesday.

“I have taken this action because of my deep concerns regarding the finances and operations of the Dodgers and to protect the best interests of the club, its great fans and all of Major League Baseball.

“My office will continue its thorough investigation into the operations and finances of the Dodgers and related entities during the period of Mr. McCourt’s ownership. I will announce the name of my representative in the next several days.”

The Dodgers, winners of six World Series titles, have been one of baseball’s glamour franchises but have been gripped by bitter in-fighting since McCourt’s wife, Jamie, filed for divorce in October 2009 after over 30 years of marriage.

The Dodgers were bought by the McCourts from Fox’s parent company News Corp. in 2004.

A judge ruled in December that the Dodgers were in effect jointly owned by the newly-divorced couple, setting the stage for further wrangling over the team.

Lawyers for McCourt immediately disputed the ruling, asserting he remained sole owner of the National League franchise, that his former spouse had no right to the club and that their legal battle would continue.

“The Dodgers have been one of the most prestigious franchises in all of sports, and we owe it to their legion of loyal fans to ensure that this club is being operated properly now and will be guided appropriately in the future,” Selig said.

While MLB boasts record revenue, the off-the-field struggles and heavy debt loads of several major-market teams’ owners have some industry observers questioning the league’s stewardship.

The Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers were pushed into bankruptcy in the last two years and the financial uncertainty over the Dodgers mirrors that of the New York Mets, who are locked in a $1 billion legal battle with the trustee for victims of Bernard Madoff’s Ponzi scheme.

Baseball, like many sports, saw fans and corporate backers trim spending during the recession, but owners suffered as well.

Many are businessmen who used debt to invest and got in over their heads, putting the fates of their profitable teams in question.

경영난 시달리던 LA 다저스, ML 사무국이 운영권 인수

결국 올 것이 왔다. 메이저리그 사무국이 LA 다저스 운영권을 인수했다. 사실상 프랭크 맥코트(사진) 시대의 종말을 고한 셈이다.

메이저리그 사무국 버드 실릭 커미셔너는 20일 “메이저리그 사무국이 재정난에 시달리고 있는 다저스를 대신 운영한다”고 발표했다. 실릭 커미셔너는 “다저스는 가장 빛나는 스포츠 프랜차이즈 중 하나다. 팬들을 위해서 팀이 제대로 운영되야 한다고 믿기 때문에 이번 결정을 내렸다”고 밝혔다.

다저스 구단주 프랭크 맥코트와 제이미 맥코트 부부의 이혼 소송과 다저스 구단 지분 다툼이 팀의 운영권 인수로 이어지게 된 것이다. 메이저리그는 최근 프랭크 맥코트 다저스 구단주가 선수 월급 등 운영비를 구하기 위해 TV 중계권을 담보로 폭스사로부터 3000만달러의 융자를 받았다는 언론 보도에 격분한 것으로 전해졌다. 실릭은 이달 초에 이미 맥코트에게 더 이상 융자를 받지 말라는 경고를 내렸던 터였다. 맥코트로선 융자를 받지 못했다면 당장 지난 주부터 선수와 직원 월급을 충당할 수 없는 판이었다. AP통신에 따르면 맥코트는 메이저리그를 상대로 소송을 준비 중인 것으로 알려졌다.

다저스는 맥코트 구단주 부부가 이혼 소송에 휩싸이며 온갖 추문에 시달렸다. 팬들도 발길을 돌렸다. 2007년에 2만7000장 팔렸던 시즌 티켓은 올해 들어 판매가 1만7000장으로 뚝 떨어졌다.

특히 다저스 구단이 산더미처럼 쌓인 빚으로 삐걱거린 동안 맥코트 구단주 부부는 융자금으로 호화판 저택을 여러 채 구입하는 등 사치스런 생활을 즐겼던 것으로 드러났다.
맥코트 부부는 현재 다저스 구단 지분을 놓고 법정싸움을 벌이고 있는데, 제이미는 50% 지분을 요구하고 있다.

앞서 프랭크는 현금을 마련하기 위해 2013년까지 다저스와 중계계약이 돼 있는 폭스사와 20년 연장 계약에 합의, 실릭 커미셔너에게 승인해줄 것을 요청했지만 실릭이 사인을 하지 않아 발등에 불이 떨어진 처지였다. 그는 방향을 틀어 폭스사로부터 개인 명의로 3000만달러의 융자를 받는데 성공, 선수들에게 간신히 월급지급은 한 상태다.

그러나 실릭 커미셔너는 선수 월급 조차 내기 버겨워 하는 맥코트가 더 이상 다저스 구단주로서의 자격이 없다고 판단, 운영권 압수라는 강경책을 택했다. 메이저리그 사무국은 일단 새로운 구단 대표를 뽑은 뒤 구단 매각 작업을 벌일 것으로 전망된다.
