Golfers trade their putters for paintbrushes

Some say there is an art to golf, but can golfers do art and vice versa? The answer, for some aspiring practitioners of both, is yes.
The first painter in the country to gain widespread recognition for doing artwork about golf was Lee Wal-chong, 66.
He started playing golf 13 years ago after he was asked to create some paintings for the Pinx Golf Club, which opened on Jeju Island in 1998. Now he is a golf aficionado who cannot imagine life without the sport.
Lee left his position as an art professor at a Seoul university 20 years ago and moved to Seogwipo on Jeju Island, which is known for its scenic golf courses.
He first connected his love of golf with art by drawing pictures on golf balls that he would use out on the green. Later, he began painting on larger canvases and started showing his work.
In the process, he has created a link between golf and art. He once said that golf and art are similar in that quality painting and golf performance come only after you empty your mind and stop obsessing about what you’re doing.
When he began doing artwork about golf, he was one of a kind. Today, he is no longer alone.
“Scenery” (2011) by Oh Soon-hwan is dedicated to golf lovers everywhere.
Four painters and eight sculptors have come together to show their work about golf. Their exhibition “Enjoying Current a Hundred Times Better” began on April 12 and runs until May 30 at Blackstone Country Club in Punggye Village, Janghowon-eup, Icheon, Gyeonggi.
Although the country club, and others like it, has organized exhibitions in the past, this is the first one they’ve hosted in which golf is the subject.
Organized by UrbanArt (www.urbanart4u.com), a gallery in southern Seoul, the exhibition shows images ranging from the idyllic to the quirky.
“Golfing Tiger” by Ahn Yun-mo features two characters typically included in folk paintings - the magpie and the tiger. In the painting, a tiger reads a book in the middle of a golf course as a magpie drinks a cup of coffee right next to him.
Visitors to the exhibition on a recent day wondered if the tiger represented Tiger Woods, but the painter said he wasn’t thinking about the American golfer when he created it.
Meanwhile, Oh Soon-hwan’s landscape series depicts a middle-aged man who is so captivated by golf that he sleeps with his golf club. There is also an image of a vase with beautiful peonies set against the backdrop of a golf course. The latter work, “Flowers at a Golf Course,” is dedicated to people who think golf is the ultimate pleasure in life.

During the exhibition period, the country club will host the Ballantine’s Championship April 28-May 1. The tournament includes the participation of several world-famous players including Lee Westwood, Ernie Els and Ian Poulter and is sponsored by Pernod-Ricard Korea, a producer of Ballantine’s whiskey.
Park Myung-sook, director of UrbanArt, drew a parallel between art, business and sport.
“Golfers, whiskey producers and painters have two things in common: creativity and the spirit of challenge,” she said.
To provide wider access to the artworks, Park said the country club is providing nonmembers with free admission to the club for the duration of the exhibition.
The club is also hoping the exhibition will inspire golfers to try their hand at art, as Lee Wal-chong and other golfers have.
Korean-American golfer Michelle Wie has gained a reputation as a good painter. British golfer Luke Donald majored in art theory and practice at Northwestern University. As an amateur artist, one of his paintings was auctioned by the PGA Tour for charity.
“Studying art has helped me be more creative when it comes to playing golf,” he once said in an interview, suggesting that more golfers should consider occasionally putting down their putters and picking up a paintbrush.

‘발렌타인 챔피언십’ 열리는 이천 블랙스톤서 ‘골프 100배 즐기기’ 전시회
골프는 스포츠다. 미술은 예술이다. 둘이 만날 확률은 낮아 보인다. 공통점이라곤 없어 보이던 이 멀고 먼 두 동네가 만나기 시작했다. 골프채를 휘두르던 골퍼들이 붓을 들고 일필휘지다. 캔버스 앞에서 마음을 닦던 화가들이 18홀을 돌며 욕심을 내려놓는다. 알고 보니 통하는 구석이 꽤 많다. 자연 속에서 자신을 돌아보고 타인과 대화하려는 공통 관심사로 묶어놓으니 찰떡궁합이다. 2011년 봄 골프와 미술의 만남, 그 현장으로 홀인원!
한국화가 이왈종(66)씨는 한국에서 골프 그림을 처음 그린 화가다. 말년까지 골프를 즐긴 원로 한국화가 월전(月田) 장우성(1912~2005)이 가끔 골프장 풍경을 그리긴 했지만 본격 골프화(畵)의 개척자로는 이왈종씨가 꼽힌다. 그는 20년 전 뜻한 바 있어 서울의 한 미술대학 교수직을 버리고 제주도 서귀포에 새 둥지를 틀었다. 제주에 살기에 골프장이 이웃이 됐다. 98년 개장을 앞둔 핀크스 골프장 클럽하우스를 장식할 그림을 그리다 골프에 입문했고 지금은 골프가 없는 삶을 상상할 수 없는 골프 매니어다. 그에게 ‘골프 그림’이란 새로운 화목(畵目)을 창조하게 만든 인생 후반전의 동력이 골프이니 인연이라 할 수 있다. 그가 ‘생활의 중도(中道)’란 제목으로 평생 찾아온 무릉도원의 그림 세계가 골프와 만나면서 힘을 얻게 됐다고 한다. 구력 13년에 핸디캡 10인 그는 46g 골프공 위에 그림을 그리며 골프와 미술의 접합을 꿈꾼다. 그림이 그려진 골프공을 창공 멀리 날려 보내며 삶의 여유를 찾는다. 마음을 비우고 집착을 버리고 나서야 득의의 그림을 얻는 것이 골프와 닮았다고 그는 믿고 있다.
화가 이왈종 “골프그림은 현대판 풍속화”
이왈종씨는 골프를 치고 골프를 주제로 한 그림을 그리며 깨달은 얘기를 후배들에게 가끔 들려준다. 골프 그림이 현대 풍속화로 잠재력이 있다는 것이다. 풍속화가 그 시대의 생활상을 잘 보여주는 속성을 지닌 그림을 가리킨다면 골프 그림이야말로 21세기에 맞춘 풍속화라는 설명이다.
그의 선견지명이 틀리지 않았음을 보여주는 전시회가 올봄 경기도 이천시 장호원읍 풍계리 산 52번지 블랙스톤 골프장에서 열리고 있다. 지난 12일부터 5월 30일까지 클럽하우스 내 갤러리에서 이어지는 ‘골프 100배 즐기기’전이다. ‘어반 아트’(대표 박명숙)가 기획한 ‘골프 100배 즐기기’는 화가와 조각가 12명이 골프를 집중 분석해 작품으로 표현한 본격 전시라는 점이 돋보인다. 그동안 골프장에서 열린 미술전은 전시 장소만 골프장이었을 뿐, 골프를 미술 작품에 녹여내는 과정이 부족했다. 미술품을 보기 좋게 늘어놓기만 해 서로를 이해하고 포용하려는 노력이 없었다. 오로지 골프를 생각하고 작업한 젊은 작가들의 패기만만한 아이디어와 순발력, 열정과 창의력이 빛나기에 이번 전시를 바라보는 골퍼와 갤러리들의 눈길이 따듯하다.
안윤모의 ‘골프 치는 호랑이’는 보는 이를 웃게 만든다. 전통 민화의 까치와 호랑이를 현대로 끌고 와 일상 속으로 밀어 넣은 작가의 일관성이 뚝심 있다. 골프를 치다 말고 누워 책을 읽는 호랑이 옆에서 까치는 벗이 되어 커피를 마신다. 관람객 중에는 이 호랑이가 혹시 타이거 우즈를 은유한 것이냐고 묻는 이도 있다. 꿈보다 해몽이 좋다는 말이 떠오른다.
오순환의 풍경 연작은 골프에 사로잡힌 영혼들을 묘사한다. 골프채를 안고서 잠이 들 지경으로 골프에 홀린 중년 남자의 모습, 골프장이야말로 이상향인 듯 풍요를 상징하는 모란꽃을 한 아름 담은 화병을 골프장에 겹쳐놓은 ‘골프장의 꽃’은 골프가 인생의 낙인 사람들에게 위안이 된다.
한때 한국인의 표지 같았던 새마을 모자를 쓰고 스윙하는 남성의 모습을 익살스럽게 그려낸 이는 강지만이다. 초록색 마스터스 모자를 쓴 듯 보이니 제법 그럴듯하다. 이지숙의 ‘레드 그린’은 속옷만 입고 뇌를 드러낸 채 골프채를 휘두르는 사람을 빚었다. 홀딱 벗고 두뇌 싸움을 벌이고 있는 골퍼의 운명이 적나라하다.
블랙스톤 회원 아니어도 입장 가능
전시회 기간 중 유러피안투어 ‘발렌타인 챔피언십’(4월 28일~5월 1일)이 개최돼 한층 뜻을 더하고 있다. 이 행사에는 리 웨스트우드, 어니 엘스, 이언 폴터 등 세계적 선수들이 참가한다. 박명숙 대표는 “골프 선수들의 장인정신, 발렌타인 양조 장인들의 정신, 미술가들의 장인정신은 창의력과 도전의식에서 하나로 통한다”고 기획 의도를 설명했다.
회원제로 운영되는 블랙스톤 골프장이 전시회를 계기로 대중과 인사할 수 있는 좋은 자리를 마련한 것도 소득이다. 회원이 아닌 모든 방문자와 고객이 클럽하우스 내부 갤러리에 들어와 그림도 감상하고 공간도 구경할 수 있는 드문 기회를 빌려 골프장의 문턱을 낮추는 효과를 기대할 수 있어서다.
한국계 여성 골퍼 미셸 위는 공부도 잘 하지만 소문난 화가이기도 하다. 영국의 유명 프로 골퍼인 루크 도널드는 아예 노스웨스턴 대학에서 회화를 전공했다. 도널드는 “그림을 공부했기에 골프를 할 때 더 창의적으로 칠 수 있다”고 털어놓았다. 골프와 미술의 본질은 그리 멀리 있는 것이 아니다. 서로 얼마나 큰 시너지 효과를 얻을 수 있는가를 보여주는 현장이 ‘골프 100배 즐기기’전이다. 미술 애호가와 골프 갤러리가 만나면 그 즐거움이 또한 100배로 커지지 않을까.
