Kim says she’s ready to reclaim her title

MOSCOW - Korean figure skater Kim Yu-na is hard at work training to take back her title in the World Figure Skating Championships and says that her new short program is ready to go.

Kim, the 2010 Olympic gold medalist, arrived in the Russian capital on Friday and went to the MegaSport Arena on Sunday to practice her short program.

Before the practice, Kim’s coach Peter Oppegard said that Kim’s skating is more expressive. During the practice, Kim showed that she is ready for another shot at the world title. Kim finished second at last year’s Worlds after having won the title in 2009.

This year, Kim will unveil a new short program to music from the ballet “Giselle,” about a young girl who protects her lover after her death.

Kim said in an interview after the practice that the key will be her ability to express her character’s emotions. She also noted that it will be a challenge to keep up with the fast pace of the music, especially given the technical elements she has planned, including a triple-triple and a triple flip-double axel combination.

During practice, Kim didn’t make any mistakes, which threw off any concerns about whether training at home in Korea for the last month was a good decision. It was. The reporters at the rink looked on in awe.

After practice, Kim sat down with Ilgan Sports to discuss her short program, which she’ll perform on Friday.

Q.How do you feel about the practice?

A. I competed here in 2007 but that was a long time ago, so I was little concerned about the quality of the ice. I felt nervous for the first 10 to 20 minutes but after that everything - jumps, spins, footwork - was back on track. I’m satisfied with how the practice went.

You came to Moscow earlier than the other skaters. Why?

First, I had to adjust to the time difference. I also knew I wouldn’t have much time in the rink and I didn’t want to miss my assigned practice time. Now, I won’t forget the feeling of practicing here.

How is the short program going?

When I first revealed that I was going to do “Giselle,” people wondered what it would be like. I was nervous about things like the costume, choreography and music editing but things have gone perfectly and I think I will be able to express myself very well.

Have you seen other versions of “Giselle”?

(Choreographer David) Wilson gave me a DVD of it and I paid special attention to my part. I’ve also watched other skaters doing “Giselle” but I want to do something different.

The ISU changed the scoring system for jumps. Does that bother you?

No. It’s not that different from what I’ve already been doing.

What’s the most important thing you think about when you do a jump?

I focus on my first jump. My first triple-triple combination needs to be good, which will make it easier to get through the rest of the program.

"2007년 (그랑프리 시리즈 대회 때) 이 경기장에서 경기했는데 너무 오래 전이라 빙질 등을 걱정했다. 첫 훈련 초반 약 10~20분은 긴장됐다. 빙질이 그간 탄 아이스링크와 달리 물렀다. 하지만 곧 점프와 스텝, 스핀 모두 제자리를 찾았다. 쇼트프로그램을 완벽하게 마쳐서 만족스러운 연습이 됐다."

-다른 선수들보다 훨씬 빨리 모스크바 현지에 도착했는데.
"시차 적응도 있고, 경기 전에 메인링크 훈련 배정 시간이 많지 않았다. 공식 스케줄에 있는 메인링크 훈련 시간을 놓치지 않으려고 일찍 들어왔다. 메인링크에서 훈련한 느낌을 잘 기억하겠다."

-쇼트프로그램은 어떤가.
"'지젤' 한다고 공개했을 때, 많은 분들이 어떤 프로그램인지 기대를 했다. 의상이나 안무, 음악편집같은 부분에 긴장이 됐다. 하지만 완벽하게 잘 끝냈고, 경기 때 되면 감정몰입을 더 잘하지 않을까 싶다."

-지젤 프로그램에 김연아의 의견도 많이 들어갔나.
"아니다. 안무를 짤 때는 데이비드 윌슨의 아이디어가 들어간다. 나는 만들어진 안무를 맛깔스럽게 표현하는데 중점을 둔다."

-다른 선수들의 '지젤'도 봤나.
"안무가 데이비드 윌슨 코치가 좋은 발레 '지젤' DVD를 줬다. 내 프로그램에 들어가는 부분을 집중적으로 봤다. 다른 선수들의 지젤도 봤다. 나는 또 다른 지젤을 만들고싶다. 차별화된 지젤을 만들기 위해 노력했는데 잘 될 지 모르겠다. 하하."

-지젤에서 가장 마음에 드는 부분은?
"한 부분도 빼놓지 않고 다 마음에 든다."

-점프 채점 기준이 조금 바뀌었는데.
"신경쓰지 않는다. 그간 했던 것과 다르지 않다."

-점프 중 가장 신경쓰는 부분은.
"아무래도 첫 점프다. 첫 트리플-트리플 점프가 좋아야 부담도 덜 되고 잘 할 수 있다. 그밖에 꼭 뛰어야하는 다른 점프들도 신경쓴다."
