‘Bibap’ lunch preview

To make the most of your lunch next week, head downtown for free samples of bibimbap (rice with mixed vegetables) and a sneak preview of a performance named after the iconic Korean dish.

Highlights of the non-verbal performance “Bibap” will be presented on Wednesday from noon to 1 p.m. in Gwanghwamun Square.

Although the show is mainly about the Korean dish, it is also about the philosophy behind the dish, which is supposed to be a harmonious mixture of different ingredients.

In the show, a group of chefs compete to make the best bibimbap but in the end realize that they can only do that by joining forces to combine their cooking secrets.

Highlights of the show were presented at the 2010 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it was well received. “The preview was only 15 minute long but it got a great review from the local media,” said Song Myung-hee, the manager of Story P, the show’s public relations company. “Bibap” is scheduled to premiere on May 27 at the Chongdong Theater.

‘최소리 &아리랑 파티’는 타악 솔로이스트이자 연출·제작자인 ‘최소리’ 총감독이 지난 10년을 구상하고 연출한 작품으로 타악연주를 기본으로 한국무용, 비보이, 태권도, 상모놀음, 마셜아츠 아티스트들이 각기 다른 몸짓과 손짓과 소리로 6색의 환상적인 비빔밥 같은 넌버벌 퍼포먼스로 관객과 소통하려는 시도가 타 공연에서 볼 수 없었던 신선한 감동을 선사한다.

최근 2010광저우 아시안게임의 폐막식 무대에 오르며 전 아시아인들의 귀와 눈을 사로잡은 바 있으며 문화체육관광부 주최 ‘2007, 2008 코리아 인 모션’의 두 해 연속 최고 우수작품상, ‘2008 에든버러프린지 페스티벌의‘100star 어워드’를 수상했다.

또한 16일 제주도에 상설전용관으로서는 한국 최대 규모의 ‘아리랑 파티by 최소리 상설전용관’의 개관을 앞두고 있다. ‘레전드 오브 제주’라는 서브 타이틀로 기획단계에서부터 제주의 설화와 아름다운 자연경관을 작품에 담았고, 공연 중 꽃잎이 떨어지는 장면에서 제주 유채꽃 향을 관객에게 선사하는 등 세계 최초로 시도하는 관객 체험형 공연으로 새로운 제주의 ‘아리랑 파티’가 탄생함으로써 제주와 한국을 대표하는 관광상품으로의 도약을 시작한다.
