Legend moves fans with sultry sex appeal

American recording artist and nine-time Grammy-winner John Legend captivated the audience with a deep voice, smouldering dance moves and understated sex appeal at a set of concerts in Korea last Tuesday and Wednesday at AX-Korea in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul. The concerts were part of Hyundai Card Culture Project’s concert series and represents Legend’s first visit to Korea since he performed a sold-out show in March 2009.

Dressed in a simple grey jacket and white T-shirt, Legend worked the crowd. He was alluring yet strangely shy but the longer he stayed on stage, the steamier things got.

While Legend was singing his hit song “P.D.A. (We Just Don’t Care),” from his 2006 album “Once Again,” he began grinding his hips and grooving to the beat, smiling bashfully the whole time. For another artist, an expression like that might have detracted from his sex appeal but Legend was able to induce high-pitch screams from the ladies in the room, who started stomping their feet as if they were the objects of his public displays of affection.

Next, he slowly removed his jacket and jumped on top of the grand piano he had been playing and when he stretched his arms out to the side, fans started snapping pictures like mad.

At this point, I was surprised at the absence of the security guards who at other concerts swoop in to prevent fans from taking pictures. I was also a bit worried that too many camera flashes would keep me from enjoying the concert but it turns out I was too hasty.

As Legend went into his next song, “Save Room,” he closed his eyes and the cameras went still as fans became mesmerized by the singer’s silky smooth voice and fluid piano playing.

In addition to being wooed by the talented singer-songwriter, Korean audiences were lucky to be treated to a preview of Legend’s unreleased song “Dreams.” The song sent the audience into a silent reverie and the repetition of the word “dreams” was almost hypnotic. Legend has long been generating these kinds of reactions from fans.

After building a solid reputation recording with artists such as Alicia Keys on 2003’s “You Don’t Know My Name,” Jay-Z’s “Encore” from 2003 and Lauryn Hill’s “Everything Is Everything” from 1999, he released his first solo album, “Get Lifted,” in 2004 to critical and commercial acclaim.

In 2006, he won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist, Best R&B Album for “Get Lifted” and Best R&B Male Vocal Performance for “Ordinary People,” the album’s second single.

He won two more Grammys for the songs “Heaven” and “Family Affair” off of his second album “Once Again.”

Prior to the concert, I wondered why the hall was selling standing room tickets for a concert by an R&B singer but I shouldn’t have worried. Though it was a bit tiring and awkward to be standing while Legend was singing slow songs, all of that was forgotten as I became swept up in the music.

He must have enjoyed himself, too. After his two concerts in Seoul, Legend wrote on his Twitter page: “2 beautiful nights in Seoul. Some of the best fans in the world.”

미국의 알앤비(R&B) 스타 존 레전드(John Legendㆍ33)는 2009년 첫 내한 공연 때 만난 한국 팬들을 이렇게 기억했다.

그는 '현대카드 컬처 프로젝트' 이벤트로 다시 내한해 오는 19~20일 서울 광장동 악스코리아에서 두 차례 공연한다.

레전드는 공연을 앞두고 최근 연합뉴스와 가진 이메일 인터뷰에서 "이번 공연에서는 '겟 리프티드(Get Lifted)' '원스 어게인(Once Again)' '이볼버(Evolver)' '웨이크 업(Wake Up)' 등 내 모든 앨범의 노래들을 골고루 부를 예정"이라고 소개했다.

그는 또 한국 팬들에게 "항상 응원해줘서 고맙다"는 인사를 전했다.

레전드는 빼어난 작곡 실력뿐 아니라 탁월한 가창력으로 국내에도 많은 팬을 보유하고 있다. 4살 때부터 피아노를 배우기 시작해 2001년 유명 래퍼이자 프로듀서인 카니예 웨스트를 만나 팝스타 브리트니 스피어스와 블랙 아이드 피스의 음반에 참여하며 본격적으로 재능을 펼쳤다.

2006년 앨범 '원스 어겐'과 작년에 발표한 '웨이크 업' 등으로 그래미상을 총 9차례 받았으며 대중적으로도 인기를 끌며 지금까지 800만 장이 넘는 음반을 판매했다.

특히 알앤비뿐만 아니라 가스펠, 록, 힙합 등 다양한 장르를 혼합하는 것으로 유명한 그는 자신의 음악 스타일에 대해 "난 솔(soul) 가수이지만 다른 장르의 음악도 모두 사랑해 내 음악에 다양한 스타일을 복합적으로 접목시키고 있다"며 "딱히 내 음악 장르를 규정하고 싶지는 않다"고 말했다.

그는 2005년 BET어워드에서 스티비 원더와 함께 공연한 이후 종종 스티비 원더의 후계자로 불리는 데 대해 "살아오면서 항상 그의 음악을 들어왔고 나에게 가장 큰 영향을 줬다"며 "그가 나의 친구이자 멘토인 것이 무척 영광스럽고 BET어워즈에서의 공연은 나의 초기 음악 활동의 중요한 사건이었다"고 했다.

미국의 지난 대통령 선거에서 후보였던 오바마 대통령을 위해 캠페인송을 주도적으로 만들었으며 여러 사회 활동에도 적극적으로 참여하고 있는 그는 평소 취미를 묻는 질문에 "역사, 사회학과 정치에 대한 책을 읽는 것을 매우 좋아한다"고 답했다.

오바마 대통령에 대해서는 "그가 하는 일이나 말에 모두 동의하는 것은 아니지만 미국을 이끌어 가려는 방향에 대해서는 동의한다. 그는 많은 어려움을 속에서도 주목할 만한 성과를 이뤄냈다"며 여전한 지지를 표했다.

레전드는 환경보호를 위한 콘서트에 적극적으로 참여하고 아프리카 난민, 기아들을 위한 캠페인을 벌이면서 2009년 타임지가 뽑은 '세계에서 가장 영향력 있는 100인'에 선정되기도 했다.

그는 이런 활동에 대한 자신의 철학을 이렇게 전했다.

"내가 많은 사람들을 도울 수 있는 위치에 있다고 생각하고 그런 사실을 아주 진지하게 받아들이고 있습니다. 도움이 필요한 사람들에게 내가 가진 모든 것을 이용해 도움을 주고 싶어요. 내가 가장 신경쓰는 부분은 가난한 사람들이 자립해 일어날 수 있게 도와주는 것입니다. 궁극적인 목표는 사람들이 양질의 교육을 통해 힘을 길러가는 것이지요. 현재 아프리카에 학교와 병원시설을 짓고 있고 가난한 미국 아이들에게 양질의 교육을 받게 하려는 노력을 계속 하고 있습니다."
