Foreign Ministry hires judge after Dokdo novel

A judge who sidelines as a novelist will work at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade for a year after publishing a novel on Korea’s easternmost islets of Dokdo, the ministry said yesterday.

Jeong Jae-min, who works as a judge at the Daegu District Court, some 300 kilometers (186 miles) southeast of Seoul, will join the ministry’s bureau for international law in July to offer legal and policy advice on dealing with Japan’s territorial claims to Dokdo, a ministry official said.

In his historical mystery, “Dokdo in the Hague,” the 34-year-old author champions Korea’s control over Dokdo by writing about the country’s fictional success in a court battle with Japan.

The book was published in 2009 under Jeong’s pen name, Ha Ji-hwan.

The appointment came after Jeong met with a Foreign Ministry official in charge of the Dokdo issue and expressed his wish to work for the ministry, the official said.

Despite fierce protests from Korea, Japan continues to lay claim to the rocky outcroppings in the East Sea.

Tokyo recently approved a new set of middle and high school textbooks describing Dokdo as its territory, setting off a series of actions by the Korean government to demonstrate its control.
