A day of bowing to Gimhae voters

Wearing a blue jacket, beige pants and white sneakers, Kim Tae-ho, the lawmaker-elect of Gimhae, South Gyeongsang, was standing at the entrance to Changwon Tunnel and bowing to all the cars that passed by at about 6 p.m. yesterday as a sign of gratitude.

“I have bowed 5,000 times every morning for this victory,” Kim said, as he continued his bowing. “This is the greatest asset of my political life and I have earned it during the past 50 days.”

Kim, 49, had won two election victories to serve as the South Gyeongsang governor from 2004 to 2010.

The political career of the young, ambitious Grand National politician, however, faced an unexpected downturn.

Kim gave up the prime minister nomination last year amid fierce attacks by the opposition parties over corruption allegations.

By winning Wednesday’s by-election to become the lawmaker representing Gimhae, the hometown of the former president Roh Moo-hyun, Kim successfully returned to the political arena.

“The voters probably felt disappointed at me but they still had faith in my capability to do the job well,” Kim said.

He admitted that the political burden to run in Wednesday’s by-election was heavy, so soon after his embarrassing failure to become the prime minister.

‘”I had been a fool,” he said. “I was nominated to be the first prime minister in his 40s in 39 years, so I was full of desire to show a perfect image. However, I had shortcomings and my heart was just full of greed.”

Kim said he wanted to be evaluated once again by running in a tough race. “I believed that was the true evaluation,” he said.

Kim, who has won a total of nine election victories including that on Wednesday, said the key for his triumph was his conviction to develop Gimhae.

“I didn’t ask the voters to help me to achieve my dream,” he said. “I appealed that I will give my everything to achieve your dreams.”

　“내가 바보 같았다. 39년 만의 40대 총리라고 하니 완벽하게 보이고 싶은 욕심이 가득했다. 촌놈 티를 낸 거다. 그래서 (김해을 같이) 쉽지 않은 지역에서 평가를 받는 것이 진심으로 평가를 받는 것이라 생각했다.”

　-도의원 선거에서부터 총 9번의 선거에서 모두 이겼다.

　“이번 선거가 역대 선거 중 가장 어려웠다. ‘당신의 꿈을 위해 내 모든 것을 바치겠다’는 각오로 임했다. 정치는 어려울 때 죽는 줄 알면서도 다 던지는 것이다.”

　-노무현 전 대통령이 살던 진영읍에서도 선전했는데.

　“상대 후보가 ‘노무현 정신’을 잘못 이해하고 있었다. 노 전 대통령의 특권 없는 세상과 사회통합, 유불리를 따지지 않는 도전의 가치는 공유하고 키워나가야 하는 가치다. ”

　-한나라당이 충격이 크다.

　“지도부가 많이 충격을 받은 것 같다. ( 당 지도부는 그에게 당선 축하 전화 한 통 하지 않았다고 한다.) 이렇게 바닥 민심이 나쁜지 저도 놀랐다. 말로만 서민 을 위한다고 해선 안 된다. 언제까지 선거 때마다 투표율이 낮아지기만을 바랄 것인가.”

　- 동남권 신공항에 대한 입장은.

　“백지화는 잘못됐다. 누군가 대통령의 눈을 흐리게 했거나 정치적 계산을 한 것이다. 신공항의 불씨를 살려내겠다.”
