Pirates nab Singapore ship with Korean crew

A Singaporean vessel carrying 25 crew members, including four Koreans, was hijacked by suspected pirates in waters off Kenya on Saturday, the ship’s manager said yesterday. Seoul’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed it, but further information was not available.

Glory Ship Management said in a statement that its MT Gemini was passing through waters off Mombasa, Kenya, when suspected pirates seized the vessel. The chemical tanker was delivering crude oil from Indonesia, the company said. The pirates are now believed to be moving the vessel to Somalia, it said.

The captain of the ship is one of the four Koreans, the company said. The crew also consists of 13 Indonesians, five Chinese and three Burmese, the company said.

“We will make every effort to secure their release,” said the company, adding that it was keeping all relevant authorities fully informed of the situation. The hijacking, if proved true, will be the first piracy involving Koreans since the 75,000-ton Hanjin Tianjin container ship was rescued from attempted piracy on April 21.

소말리아 해적 소행으로 추정

선장을 포함해 한국인 4명이 탄 싱가포르 선적 화학물질 운반선 ‘MT 제미니’호가 지난달 30일 케냐 인근 해역에서 소말리아 해적으로 추정되는 괴한들에게 납치됐다고 AFP 통신이 1일 보도했다.

선박 소유사인 ‘글로리 십 매니지먼트’는 “25명이 탑승한 화학물질 운반선 ‘MT 제미니’호가 인도네시아를 출발해 케냐 몸바사로 향하던 중 선박에 오른 괴한들에게 끌려갔다”고 밝혔다.

이 배엔 선장 박모(56)씨와 선원 등 한국인 4명, 인도네시아인 13명, 중국인 5명, 미얀마인 3명이 타고 있었다. 선박에는 3만1000t의 인도네시아산 야자유가 실려 있었다. 이 회사는 피랍 선박이 현재 소말리아로 향하고 있는 것으로 보인다고 전했다.

한국 외교부 관계자는 “납치된 선박의 선사가 싱가포르 회사여서 국제법상 싱가포르 정부가 구출해야 할 사안”이라고 말했다. 이어 “외교부는 지난달 30일 납치 사실을 확인한 직후 비상대책 본부를 설치하고 ‘신속하고 안전하게 선원들을 구출해달라’고 싱가포르 정부에 요청했다”고 설명했다. 이 관계자는 “싱가포르가 선박이 납치된 해역에 군함을 파견하고 있지 않고, 피랍 지점이 해적들의 본거지와 가까워 구출 작전이 어려울 가능성이 있다”고 말했다.
