Airan Kang’s exhibition “The Luminous Poem” runs through May 29 at Gallery Simon in Seoul. Provided by the gallery

In her solo exhibition “The Luminous Poem,” which opened late last month at Gallery Simon in Tongui-dong, central Seoul, Airan Kang has created an interactive space with a series of delicate and thought-provoking digital installations.

Since 1997, the 51-year-old artist and Ewha Womans University professor has been known for creating book-shaped objects made of plastic and LED lights. These “digital book projects,” in which she assembles libraries of “books” symbolizing knowledge and the beginning of civilization, have since become Kang’s trademark.

In the Gallery Simon show, the “books” are arranged into a library and the luminescence from the books, all programmed to continually change in hue and brightness, imbues the gallery with a dreamy atmosphere.

The books on the shelves are replicas of existing books of multiple genres ranging from literature to the arts. They stand side by side with a series of imaginary books created by the artist. A mirror hung opposite the shelves creates the illusion of a seemingly infinite space.

Although the book covers are striking in appearance, the books themselves are devoid of content, drawing a fine line between an ostentatious superficiality and an empty reality.

The highlight of the exhibition, however, begins at the entrance of the second floor exhibition hall, where visitors are greeted by a stack of 10 plastic LED books. These LED books represent the works of 10 English poets ranging from John Milton to William Shakespeare.

Viewers are encouraged to choose a book from the entrance, place it on a shelf next to a book-shaped structure within the dimly lit exhibition hall and step inside the structure. Once inside, viewers hear a recitation of the poem as the text scrolls across the dark surface of the structure.

According to the artist, the digital installations featured in the exhibition are designed to help viewers feel and become part of a book.

Her installations also suggest an ultramodern view of books that goes beyond the printed word to include an interactive experience with the text.

“Books are marked by immateriality and a literary space of boundless imagination. I wanted to create books with a tangible reality,” Kang said. “Thus, the digital book project primarily aims to create a realistic visual representation of a book’s imaginary elements.”

In addition to the digital book installation, paintings of stacks of books on Monet, Lautrec and Degas are displayed on the third floor of the gallery, where text also scrolls across the wall when the lights are off.

Kang earned her MFA and Ph.D. at Tama University in Tokyo. Since her debut as a media artist in 1986, she has exhibited her works in Korea, New York, Paris and Japan.

The exhibition continues until May 29.
