Bogus threat to bomb Seoul locations

An e-mail threatening to blow up the Samsung Electronics headquarters and nine Arabic embassies in Seoul sent SWAT officers on a bomb hunt around Seoul yesterday afternoon, but police said no explosives were found.

According to the National Police Agency’s Counter-Terrorism Center, a Samsung Electronics office in Canada received an e-mail in English from a sender using the name “dilara zahedani” at 4:28 a.m. Monday local time, after Osama bin Laden’s death was reported in the news.

According to police, the e-mailer threatened to plant bombs from Monday to Friday at Samsung headquarters and nine Arabic embassies in Seoul, including those of Saudi Arabia, Iran, Syria, Egypt and Bahrain, and then detonate them.

Sixty SWAT officers, including an explosives disposal team and a strike force, were dispatched to Samsung Electronics headquarters in Seocho at 7:35 a.m. yesterday. Police also searched seven Arabic embassies, wrapping up the operation at 3 p.m. yesterday after no bombs were found.

Police said the e-mail was probably a prank, and not a very well informed one considering that Syria and Bahrain don’t have embassies in Korea.

‘삼성ㆍ아랍대사관 폭파’ 협박 이메일

빈라덴 사망 발표 직후 발송…‘테러 개연성 낮아’

삼성 사옥과 주한 아랍국가 대사관을 폭파하겠다는 협박 이메일이 접수돼 경찰이 수색작업을 벌이고 있다.

경찰청 대테러센터에 따르면 "삼성 본사와 주한 터키, 파키스탄, 사우디아라비아, 이란, 오만, 바레인, 요르단, 시리아, 이집트 대사관에 2~6일 폭발물을 설치해 폭파시키겠다"는 내용의 영문 이메일이 2일 삼성 캐나다 현지 법인에 들어왔다.

이메일은 오사마 빈 라덴의 사망 소식이 전해진 직후인 2일 오전 4시28분(현지 시각) 발송됐고 발신자는 `dilara zahedani`라는 아랍계 이름을 아이디로 썼다.

경찰은 삼성 측의 신고를 받고 3일 오전 7시35분께부터 서울 서초동 삼성전자 서초사옥에 특공대와 타격대, 강력팀원 등 50여명을 보내 지하 주차장 등지에서 폭발물 탐지작업을 벌이고 있다.

경찰 관계자는 "삼성전자 사옥의 보안을 뚫고 폭발물을 설치하기가 쉽지 않지만 일반인이 출입할 수 있는 장소들을 철저히 수색 중"이라고 말했다.

경찰은 또 발신자가 지목한 아랍국가 대사관 측에 이러한 내용을 통보하고 주변 순찰을 강화했다.

경찰은 그러나 이메일에 적힌 9개 국가 가운데 바레인과 시리아는 국내에 대사관이 없는 점으로 미뤄 계획된 테러일 개연성은 낮은 것으로 보고 캐나다 현지 경찰이 수사에 착수하면 주재관 등을 통해 협조할 계획이다.
