Lit forum hosts global talents

Lions of the literary world including Nobel prize winners Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clezio and Gao Xingjian will come to Korea later this month to participate in one of the nation’s biggest literary events.

The Seoul International Forum for Literature 2011, organized by the Daesan Foundation, will be held from May 24 to 26 on the 23rd floor of the Kyobo Life Insurance Building in Gwanghwamun, central Seoul.

The theme of this year’s forum is “The Globalizing World and the Human Community.” The Seoul forum was first held in 2000 and again in 2005. This year’s forum will be the third edition of the event.

“In this forum, participants will discuss what literary people write in the unavoidable trends toward globalization,” said Kim Seong-kon, literary critic and chairman of the forum’s executive committee.

Keynote speeches will be given by the French novelist Le Clezio, the Chinese-born French novelist and playwright Gao and the Korean literary critic Kim U-chang, who is also the chairman of the forum’s organizational committee. They will each speak on a different morning of the three-day forum.

Le Clezio was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Literature, which described him as an “author of new departures, poetic adventure and sensual ecstasy, explorer of a humanity beyond and below the reigning civilization.” Gao received the 2000 Nobel Prize “for an œuvre of universal validity, bitter insights and linguistic ingenuity, which has opened new paths for the Chinese novel and drama.”

In the afternoons, there will be discussions under five themes: The Self and the Other in the Age of Multiculturalism; Writing in the Globalizing World; Literature in the Age of Post-Ideology; Writing for the World Market and the Multimedia Environment; and Literature and Eco-Criticism.

The panelists include such recognized authors as Ben Okri, a Nigerian poet and novelist, and Sir Andrew Motion, a British poet and novelist.

Okri is often described as one of Africa’s most famous writers and is known for his commentary on African political and social issues. Motion was the Poet Laureate of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2009.

Also scheduled to participate are German novelist Ingo Schulze and Japanese novelist Yoko Tawada.

In addition to international literary figures, the forum will also include the participation of several Korean writers, including established novelists such as Yi Mun-yol and Gong Ji-young and emerging novelists such as Jeong Yi-hyun.

All speeches and discussions are open to the public and simultaneous translation into Korean, English and French will be provided for those in attendance.

　국제문학계의 거물이 한꺼번에 한국을 찾는다. 독일의 차세대 작가 잉고 슐체, 일본어와 독일어로 동시에 소설을 쓰는 요코 다와다 등 ‘중진’도 온다. 24∼26일 열리는 서울국제문학포럼(www.seoulforum.org/2011)에 참가한다. 포럼은 2000년, 2005년에 이어 올해로 세 번째. 국내 최대 규모의 국제문학 행사다. 국내에서는 시인 정현종씨, 소설가 박범신·이문열·성석제·공지영·김연수·정이현씨, 문학평론가 유종호씨 등 32명이 참여한다. 평론가 김우창씨와 김성곤씨가 각각 조직위원장과 집행위원장을 맡는다.

　이전 포럼은 ‘경계를 넘어 글쓰기’‘평화를 위한 글쓰기’를 주제 삼아 문학의 오늘을 진단하고 미래를 모색했다. 올해의 주제는 ‘세계화 속의 삶과 글쓰기’. 김성곤 집행위원장은 “거스를 수 없는 세계화의 흐름 속에 작가들이 무엇을 어떻게 써야 하는지 따져보자는 취지”라고 설명했다.

　행사 기간 매일 오전에는 르 클레지오·가오싱젠·김우창씨 등이 번갈아 기조강연을 한다. 오후에는 ‘문학과 세계화’ ‘다문화 시대의 자아와 타자’ ‘이데올로기와 문학’ ‘다매체, 세계시장, 글쓰기’ ‘지구 환경과 인간’ 등 다섯 개 소주제 아래 발제·토론이 진행된다. 일례로 25일 오후에는 벤 오크리·이문열·정과리·정지아씨 등이 ‘이데올로기와 문학’을 주제로 발표를 한다.

　포럼의 모든 행사는 일반에 열려 있다. 서울 광화문 교보빌딩 23층에 있는 350석 규모 컨벤션홀 등에서 열려 자리가 넉넉하다. 사전에 e-메일로 신청하면 좌석을 배정받을 수 있다. 김우창 조직위원장은 “문학에 대한 일반인의 관심이 높아지고 한국 작가들이 세계적 작품을 낼 수 있는 계기가 됐으면 좋겠다”고 말했다. 참가신청 e-메일은 sifl@daesan.or.kr. 대산문화재단·서울문화재단이 주관하고 한국문화예술위원회가 후원한다.
