LFP joins pro-change drive for ‘survival’

Lee Hoi-chang yesterday offered his resignation as head of the minor conservative Liberty Forward Party (LFP), calling for “a new change” within the party in a resignation speech at the National Assembly in Yeouido.

“I wish to step down from my position as party chairman in order to bring about change in our party. I hope that my resignation will be the first steps in our party’s change,” said Lee yesterday morning.

“Our survival depends on how we change, and I wish to bury myself as the fertilizer for this successful transformation,” he added.

Lee said in the speech that both the Grand National Party and Democratic Party were going through changes, and that it is time for the LFP to make a transition as well.

The move comes just days after the GNP selected a new leadership following a major loss in the April 27 by-elections.

The LFP has been considered the odd man out ever since it was founded by Lee in 2008 after losing to Lee Myung-bak in the 2007 presidential election.

Although it is the third-largest party in the National Assembly with 16 seats, it has garnered little support from voters in the past. The party’s support is centered in the central provinces of North and South Chungcheong.

Lee’s resignation yesterday was aimed at boosting the party’s chances in parliamentary and presidential elections next year.

“We all must see this as a do-or-die situation in order to save the party and save ourselves,” said Lee. “We must not forget that we are the third party, having to compete with the GNP and DP. We must be better than them to survive.”

After his speech, Lee told reporters that he was willing to come together with “forces that had been with us at the beginning of our party,” hinting at a possible reunion with Sim Dae-pyung, a former LFP leader who was second to Lee.

Sim angrily left the party in August 2009 following a feud with Lee. Sim is now leader of a minor party called the People First Party.

Expectations are high that the LFP’s efforts for reform and a possible reunion with Sim will unite Chungcheong voters.

Shortly after Lee’s announcement, the LFP appointed Byun Ung-jun as successor. Byun immediately set up an emergency committee to bring together the Chungcheong area and pull in fresh manpower to boost the party.

이회창 "충청권 재결집"…대표직 사퇴

자유선진당 이회창 대표가 9일 대표직에서 전격 사퇴했다.

이 대표는 이날 오전 국회에서 열린 최고위원.국회의원 연석회의에서 "우리 당 변화의 물꼬를 트기 위해 당 대표직에서 물러서고자 한다"며 "우리 당이 어떻게 변화하느냐가 생존의 갈림길이 될 것이고 그 변화를 위해 나를 묻어 밑거름이 되고자 하는 것"이라고 말했다.

선진당은 이 대표의 사의를 수락하고 당헌에 따라 변웅전 선임 최고위원을 대표로 선출했으며, 11일 최고위원회의를 열어 임시 지도부 성격을 띤 비상대책위원회로의 지도체제 전환을 포함, 당 운영 전반에 대해 논의할 예정이다.

이 대표는 연석회의 후 기자간담회를 갖고 사퇴 배경으로 "우리 당과 정체성을 같이 하고 우리당 출범시에 손을 잡았던 세력들이 다시 한번 결집할 필요가 있다"고 말해 충청권을 공통 지역기반으로 한 심대평 국민중심연합 대표와의 재결합을 추진할 뜻임을 분명히 했다.

그는 보수 정당과의 합당 또는 연대를 추진할지에 대해서는 "정치상황이 소용돌이치는 상황이 올 때 우리 당이나 내가 어떤 행동을 할지는 지금 당장 그림을 그릴 만한 정도가 못된다"고 언급, 그 가능성을 닫지 않았다.

정치권에서는 보수대연합 시나리오로 일단 선진당과 국민중심연합이 재결합한 뒤 내년 총선과 대선 국면에서 한나라당과 합당 또는 후보단일화 같은 선거연대를 하는 방안이 거론돼왔다.

이 대표는 '한나라당과 민주당의 변화 노력이 총선과 대선 승리를 위한 정계개편의 시작으로 보느냐'는 질문에 "정치라는 게 연달아 움직여가는 생물이기 때문에 어느 순간이라도 미래와 연계 안된 건 없다"면서 "그런 면에서 정계개편이나 정부의 변화가 시작됐다고는 할 수 있을 것"이라고 말했다.

그러나 선진당 내에서는 세종시와 과학벨트 논란으로 인해 현 정부에 대한 충청권 민심 이반이 심각하다는 현실 때문에 한나라당과의 합당에 반대하는 의견이 지배적이어서 이 대표의 보수대연합론이 추동력을 얻을지는 미지수다.

임영호 대변인은 기자들과 만나 "충청권의 여론상 한나라당과 합당하면 총선에서 재선이 불가능하다"며 "한나라당도 분열해서 성공한 적이 없기 때문에 분열하지 않을 것"이라고 말했다.

한 고위 당직자는 "이회창과 심대평은 이제 뭉쳐라는 게 충청도의 여론이자 지상명령"이라고 전제한 뒤 "이 대표의 사퇴는 충청권 결집의 구심점을 만들려는 의도이며, 보수대연합은 그것이 이뤄지고 난 다음 단계에 나올 법한 얘기"라고 말했다.
