More clues emerge on explosives suspect

Seoul police said yesterday that the explosives that went off in Seoul Station and the Express Bus Terminal on Thursday were homemade devices that could be made with a “high-school grasp” of knowledge and that the parts used could easily be bought at large supermarkets.

“Based on our experts’ opinions, we feel that the suspect does not have professional knowledge of explosives and we strongly believe that this was a person who had ill feelings against society or wanted attention,” said Lee Sang-jeong of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency. “After analyzing the evidence found, the brands of the hiking backpack and timer batteries from the two locations matched.”

Lee said that the bombs were simple devices with battery-powered timers that were wired to set off a fuse that would light gunpowder. Once the gunpowder was lit, the heat from the flame set off a butane gas container. Or it was supposed to.

The first, at Seoul Station, misfired and produced mostly smoke. The second, at Seoul’s Express Bus Terminal in Seocho District, exploded loudly.

“We are seeing both incidents as tears [in the gas cans], and not explosions,” said Lee, explaining that not enough gas was ignited to cause a real explosion. The officer explained that the sounds passersby heard were of the cans ripping apart because of the pressure from the heated gas.

The gunpowder that had been found was also of a variety that can easily be found in toys and small fireworks, police said.

The police said yesterday that no prints were found in Seoul Station, as the suspect captured by surveillance cameras had been wearing gloves.

Ko Ik-jun, a scientific investigator, also said during yesterday’s briefing that a “proper” butane gas explosion would have resulted in the door of the coin locker flying off. “The explosive force would have been the same as setting off the same bomb in a wastebasket,” Ko said.

A day after the explosions, police were alarmed once again when they received a tip about a box containing explosives at Yeoksam Station in Gangnam. The box was found to be empty. One police official said that the fake box had probably been set at the subway station to “take advantage of the social fear of acts of terror.”

서울역과 강남고속버스터미널에서 ‘사제폭탄’ 폭발 사건이 발생한 가운데 서울시내 지하철역에도 폭발물로 의심되는 물건이 있다는 신고가 잇따라 들어와 경찰 특공대가 출동했다.

경찰에 따르면 13일 오전 11시30분쯤 한 시민이 “서울 지하철 2호선 역삼역 개찰구 근처에 폭발물로 추정되는 상자가 있다”고 순찰 중이던 경찰관에게 신고했다. 경찰은 주변 출입을 통제하고 특공대 폭발물처리반(EOD)을 동원해 X선 검색 등을 한 결과 폭발물이 아니라고 판단해 오후 1시쯤 상자를 열어 위험한 물질이 없다는 것을 확인했다.

　서울 강남경찰서 관계자는 “상자를 정교하게 포장한 점으로 미뤄 폭탄 테러에 대한 공포 분위기를 조성하려던 것으로 보인다. 수사에 착수할지 검토하겠다”고 말했다.

　이날 오후 6시쯤엔 서울 목동 지하철 5호선 오목교역 7번 출구 근처 기둥에서 방치된 헝겊 가방이 발견돼 특공대 폭발물처리반이 출동했다. 양천경찰서 관계자는 “단순 분실물일 가능성이 크지만 만약의 사태에 대비해 확인 작업을 벌였다”고 말했다.

　한편 경찰은 사건이 발생한 12일 오전 5시~6시쯤 서울역과 강남고속버스터미널 물품보관함 근처를 지나는 용의자의 모습이 담긴 폐쇄회로(CC)TV 화면을 추가로 확보해 조사하고 있다. 경찰은 서울역과 강남고속버스터미널의 사제폭탄 폭발 사건이 동일인의 소행일 가능성이 큰 것으로 보고 수사 중이다.

　서울지방경찰청은 이날 “폭발물 잔해를 국립과학수사연구원에서 정밀 감식한 결과 두 곳에서 모두 부탄가스통과 가방, 배터리, 디지털 타이머, 전선 등이 발견됐고 동일한 제품들인 것으로 보인다”고 밝혔다. 경찰에 따르면 용의자가 폭발 장치를 넣은 가방은 20L짜리 등산용 가방으로 불에 심하게 탔지만 상표 등으로 미뤄 같은 제품으로 추정되고 있다.

배터리는 12V, 용량 2.0AH짜리 국내 R사의 동일 제품이고, 디지털 타이머 역시 국내 H사의 동일 제품인 것으로 파악됐다고 경찰은 설명했다.

　경찰은 두 곳에서 모두 가스통이 파열되는 정도로 그쳤고, 기폭장치에 사용된 재료가 비교적 구하기 쉬운 것들인 점 등으로 미뤄 폭발물에 대한 지식이 많지 않은 비전문가의 소행일 것으로 보고 있다. 경찰 관계자는 “폭죽용 화약은 폭발력이 약해 대량 살상용으로 사용하기에는 부적합하다”며 “사회에 불만이 있거나 자기과시욕이 강한 사람에 의한 소행으로 보인다”고 말했다.
