Explosions meant to make man money

A string of explosions at two major Seoul transportation hubs last week were an individual’s attempt to manipulate stock prices for his own monetary gain, police said yesterday, three days after they launched a terrorism probe into the attacks.

The explosions, which caused no injuries, occurred about an hour apart on Thursday - the first at Seoul Station and then at the Seoul Express Bus Terminal.

Police on Saturday took custody of a 43-year-old man, identified only by his last name of Kim, and two other men on suspicion of placing homemade explosives inside lockers set up at both locations, triggering the explosions involving what appeared to be butane tanks connected to electrical wires.

Kim led the group and hoped to make large profits from his investments in futures options by driving down stock prices through the attacks, police said.

Kim had been struggling to repay his debts after failing to make profits from a separate set of money he borrowed and invested in the stock market after his release from prison in July 2010, they said.

Police also said Kim had two accomplices in the plot - a 36-year-old man, who bought eight firecrackers, a timer and batteries, and a 51-year-old man, who was promised 30 million won ($29,000) in return for placing the two explosives in the lockers. The two were only identified by their surnames of Lee and Park, respectively.

“The explosions appear to have been aimed at attaining an individual’s personal economic goals, rather than an act of terrorism with political motivations,” said a police official. “We plan to determine the exact cause through further investigation.”

Police said they plan to seek an arrest warrant for Kim and book the other two without detention.

“주가 폭락시키려고 연쇄폭발 범행”

경찰, 서울역·강남터미널 사건 용의자 3명 체포

지난 12일 서울역과 강남고속버스터미널에서 일어난 연쇄 폭발 사건은 주가 폭락을 유발해 이득을 얻으려는 의도로 벌인 계획적인 범행인 것으로 조사됐다.

서울지방경찰청은 “사건의 주범인 김모(43)씨를 14일 붙잡아 이틀간 조사한 결과 5000만원을 풋옵션에 투자하면서 주식 폭락을 노리고 연쇄 폭발을 계획했다는 진술을 확보했다”고 15일 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 김씨는 경찰 조사에서 특수강도 혐의로 복역하다 지난해 7월 출소한 뒤 3억300만원을 빌려 주식 선물거래에 투자했다가 실패해 심한 빚 독촉을 받았다고 진술했다. 이에 따라 지인에게서 빌린 5000만원을 풋옵션에 투자하기로 하고 옵션 만기일인 12일을 범행일로 잡았다는 것이다. 김씨는 “공공시설에서 폭발 사건이 일어나면 주가가 내려가 큰 이득을 볼 것으로 기대했다”고 진술한 것으로 전해졌다.

김씨는 지난달 인터넷 검색을 통해 폭발물 제조법을 익힌 뒤 공범 이모(36)씨에게 폭죽 8통과 타이머, 배터리 등 21만원어치를 사도록 했다고 경찰은 설명했다. 이씨로부터 재료를 건네받은 김씨는 지난 12일 오전 4시쯤 천호대교 밑 한강공원 주차장에 렌터카를 주차시킨 뒤 차량 안에서 폭발물 2개를 만들어 각각 당일 오전 10시50분과 11시50분에 폭발하도록 설정했다. 이어 오전 5시30분쯤 공범 박모(51)씨에게 폭발물이 담긴 가방 2개를 주면서 “서울역과 강남터미널 물품보관함에 1개씩 넣고 오면 3000만원을 주겠다”고 말한 것으로 조사됐다. 김씨는 “변장하라”며 박씨에게 여성용 가발과 콧수염을 전달하기도 했다.

경찰은 이씨가 지난 4일 경기도 파주의 H사에서 범행에 사용된 타이머를 구입한 사실을 파악하고 이씨를 붙잡은 다음 주범 김씨와 박씨도 하루 만에 모두 검거했다. 김씨는 범행 동기를 묻는 취재진에게 “빚 독촉을 더는 버틸 수 없었다”고 말했다.

경찰은 주범 김씨에게 폭발물 사용죄를 적용해 구속영장을 신청하고 공범 이씨와 박씨에 대해선 폭발물 사용 방조 혐의로 불구속 입건했다. 김씨는 실제 폭발물 설치를 마친 직후인 12일 오전 풋옵션에 투자했으나 2000만원 정도의 손실을 본 것으로 알려졌다. 경찰 관계자는 “당일 코스피 지수가 하락해 이득을 볼 수도 있었으나 장중 지수가 오르자 풋옵션을 매도하는 바람에 손실을 봤다”고 설명했다. 경찰은 김씨 등을 상대로 범행 동기를 보강 조사할 계획이다.
