Michelin Green Guide for Korea

It has taken more than a century to get here but the renowned Michelin Green Guide has finally launched its first Korea edition.

The 456-page travel guidebook, released yesterday, will initially be released only in France, with the first batch of around 5,000 copies to be sold for 25 euros ($35). According to the Korea Tourism Organization, which helped produce the guide, an English language version of the guide will be released this November.

“[Through the guide], we will help more tourists travel to Korea,” Bernard Delmas, president of the Far-East Asia branch of the company, which includes Michelin Korea, said yesterday.

First published in 1900, Michelin started with the more widely known Michelin Red Guide, which is the oldest and perhaps the most recognized hotel and restaurant guide in the world. The Green Guide, first published in 1926, focuses on general tourism and ranks tourist destinations using the company’s famous three-star ranking system, which is also used in the Red Guide. There are currently 385 Green Guides in 10 different languages.

The Green Guide Korea is the seventh such book about Asia, after Japan, China and Hong Kong, Thailand and Indonesia, among others.

“The launch of Green Guide Korea comes as Korean culture, centering on the K-Pop trend, is becoming increasingly popular in France,” Lee Charm, the KTO president, said during the book launch yesterday in central Seoul.

A team of 12 writers contributed to the Green Guide Korea, which has information on where to sleep and eat, Korean culture and history and contains 33 maps of different regions in the country.

KTO and Delmas declined to comment specifically on the future publication of the Michelin Red Guide Korea, although Delmas said that a Red Guide on Korea is in the works and will be launched as soon as possible.
