Midfielder Koo returns home to a new set of challenges

Koo Ja-cheol

Korean footballer Koo Ja-cheol’s first season in the German Bundesliga wasn’t easy. The former Jeju United FC player went to Germany in February after signing with VfL Wolfsburg, but three months wasn’t enough time for him to adjust to a different culture and a new club.

He returned to Korea on Tuesday after the end of the Bundesliga season on Saturday. The 22-year-old told the reporters who met him when he arrived at Incheon International Airport that living away from home was more difficult than he expected. He praised his fellow Koreans in Europe - including Park Ji-sung, Lee Chung-yong and Ki Sung-yueng - for living successfully in foreign countries.

Koo’s problems off the pitch were replicated on the field as well. Koo said that it was difficult to get along with his new teammates in such a short time and to make an impact for the team.

Koo, the top scorer in the Asian Cup this year with five goals, started two games in 10 in Germany, collecting only one assist.

But Koo said he was happy that Wolfsburg had escaped from the relegation zone and that he is ready to start playing again for Korea.

The Korea Football Association recently announced that Koo will play on the senior national team in friendlies slated for next month but the midfielder said he is also eager to join the Olympic team, which also has regional qualification matches next month.

Ilgan Sports, the JoongAng Ilbo’s daily sports newspaper, was there when Koo landed at Incheon International Airport on Tuesday. Here are excerpts from his press conference.

Q. How do you feel about your performance in Germany?

A. Whatever the result is, the three months that I spent in Germany were valuable. I desperately wanted to play there and that’s why I practiced so hard in Korea. While in Germany, I learned a lot about what I need to do in the future.

If you could rate yourself this season, what would your score be?

I’d probably give myself a 50 (out of 100). I’ll try to work hard to make up the other half. I wasn’t at the top of my form when I went to Germany but I’m happy that I didn’t give up and fought until the end.

Were you worried that your team was going to be in the second division next season?

Not especially. But in the last game against Hoffenheim, we were trailing 0-1 with only 30 minutes of the match left, so I felt a little bit of pressure. I didn’t have a chance to play in that game but I was happy to celebrate with my teammates afterward.

Do you think the K-League needs a promotion and relegation system like the one in Germany?

My teammates were passionate until the last game as though we were about to win the championship and we overcame the pressure of relegation. I think the K-League also needs a relegation and promotion system because Korean footballers can play up until the last moment.

Your first goal was ruled out because of an offside but if it had been ruled as a goal, do you think you would have had a more successful season?

I would have been happy if it had been ruled as a goal. But after the game, I was stressed physically and mentally, so I had a difficult time. Things can’t always go well, you know.

What’s your impression of the Bundesliga after having spent half a season in Germany?

It’s more compact and intense from what I saw on TV. Compared to the play in the K-League, there is no time to hesitate. I learned that you need to make a decision and act quickly.

Now, the biggest issue is whether you’ll play for the Olympic team, but Wolfsburg head coach Felix Magath recently said that he didn’t think you should do it. What are your thoughts?

He told me that I should take a break because I’d played too much but nothing is finalized yet and my agent will deal with it.

As a player, I want to play in the Olympics. I want to spend time with my teammates during the Olympic qualifiers and I want to help the team.

When you heard Magath’s opinion, how did you react?

I told him that I could potentially have my military service deferred (by winning an Olympic medal). They want me to play and so do I. But if the coach says I should rest, it’s not something I can control.

You are also wanted by the senior national team. Do you think you can play for both teams?

I never thought about playing for two national teams, but if I had to, I could do it. As I said, nothing has been decided yet.

Does that mean you want to play for just one national team?

It’s not like that. I’m just tired right now and I’m not in position to make that kind of decision. I think it’s always an honor to play for the national team. Even if you are tired, you need to answer the call proudly.
