‘Korea’s Hawking’ awarded $2.8M

A court in California ordered Ford Motor Co. to pay $2.78 million in damages to Lee Sang-mook, professor at Seoul National University’s School of Earth and Environmental Science, who was crippled in a July 2006 accident in a Ford E350 in California.

The judgement was passed last December but was only announced by Seoul National University Tuesday.

The court said Lee, who is paralyzed from the neck down, was due compensation because the design of the car’s roof was faulty. Lee, 49, filed the lawsuit in April 2010.

In 2006, Lee was driving the Ford van, which had been remodeled for field research, for a geological survey on the Carrizo Plain grassland in southeastern California with a 24-year-old female student. The van accidentally flipped over and its roof collapsed, killing the student and paralyzing Lee due to a spinal injury.

According to the court, Ford should take responsibility for a design flaw in the van’s roof. Lee demanded $4.69 million in compensation.

The court also ruled that Quigley Motor Company, which remodeled the van for field research, should pay Lee $775,000 in compensation.

“Lee has suffered through the death of his student and the medical payments for his injury,” a Seoul National University official said, “and he’s relieved by the ruling.”

Despite his paralysis, Lee has continued his research and gives lectures. He rides around campus in an electric wheelchair, giving rise to the nickname “Korea’s Stephen Hawking.”

Lee published an autobiography called “0.1 Grams of Hope,” based on his ordeal, and donated its profits to a scholarship in the name of the killed student.
