Ki helps Celtic to 35th Scottish Cup

Ki fired the opening goal for Celtic in the 32nd minute with his left foot. The Korean’s 25-meter strike passed Motherwell goalkeeper Darren Randolph and landed in the bottom right corner of the net, giving the Glasgow Club a 1-0 lead in the first half.
The goal was Ki’s fourth of the season. The 22-year-old hasn’t scored since Dec. 27, when he scored against St. Johnstone. Ki has a record of four goals and five assists in 30 games, including the league and the Cup, this season. In his debut season, Ki only had one assist for the team.
After the match, Ki was selected as the Scottish Cup final’s Man of the Match. The Korean midfielder said that he felt his teammates’ support.
“We believe in ourselves and we know that our quality is much better than Motherwell’s,” Ki told Sky Sports in a post-game interview. “I think everyone played fantastic today.”
Celtic, which beat Motherwell 4-0 last week in the final game of league campaign, put Greek player Georgios Samaras and English striker Gary Hooper up front, with Ki and Scott Brown supporting the two forwards from the center midfield.
Celtic signalled their intent after just two minutes with a header from Hooper’s but underdog Motherwell fought back with shots from Jamie Murphy and John Sutton.
Ki broke the 0-0 stalemate in the 32nd minute with his powerful left foot drive after receiving a pass from Kris Commons, marking his first and last goal of the Scottish Cup this season.
Celtic added two more goals in the second half to close the game 3-0 against Motherwell, which was looking for its first Cup since 1991.
Celtic defender Marc Wilson watched his 76th minute shot deflect off Motherwell’s Stephen Craigan and roll into the net. Twelve minutes later, left wingback Charlie Mulgrew sealed the win with one of his trademark free kicks, giving Celtic its 35th Cup title, the most of any Scottish Club.
It was also Celtic’s first Scottish Cup trophy since 2007 and its first under manager Neil Lennon, who was under pressure after finishing as runner-up in both the Scottish Premier League and League Cup this season against arch-rival Glasgow Rangers. The Hoops finished one point behind Rangers in the league and were beaten 2-1 in the League Cup in March.
For Ki, it was his first trophy since turning professional in 2006 when he signed with FC Seoul. The midfielder was on the roster but did not play when FC Seoul won the League Cup in 2006. He made his pro debut in 2007 and moved to Scotland in 2010.
His teammate Cha Du-ri was in the squad for Celtic but failed to play in the match. The right back for Celtic and the Korean national team has played 16 games in the league but hasn’t played a single game in the Scottish Cup.
The two are expected to play for the national team in a friendly against Ghana on June 3 and Serbia on June 7. The national team squad will be announced today.

2009년 9월 영국 스카이스포츠는 기성용(22·셀틱)을 “아시아 최고의 유망주로 잠재 가치는 무려 2000만 파운드(약 350억원)”라고 평가했다.
스코틀랜드 프로축구 명문 셀틱 구단의 판단도 비슷했다. 셀틱은 스카이스포츠의 보도가 나온 3개월 뒤 FC서울에 200만 유로(약 31억원)를 주고 기성용을 영입했다. 피터 로웰 사장이 한국을 방문해 입단식을 열었을 정도로 기성용에 대해 큰 기대감을 나타냈다.
1년5개월이 지났다. 유럽이 주목한 기성용의 잠재력이 마침내 폭발했다. 137년 역사를 자랑하는 스코티시컵(FA컵) 결승 무대에서. 기성용은 22일(한국시간) 스코틀랜드 글래스고 햄든파크에서 열린 마더웰과의 FA컵 결승전에서 0-0으로 맞선 전반 32분 결승골을 터뜨렸다.
27m 거리에서 터진 벼락같은 왼발슛이었다. 크리스 커먼스의 패스를 받은 기성용은 한 차례 드리블한 뒤 벌칙구역 정면에서 슈팅을 날렸다. 미사일처럼 날아간 공은 마더웰 골문 왼쪽 구석에 꽂혔다. 마더웰의 대런 란돌프 골키퍼가 몸을 날렸지만 공이 지나간 뒤였다. 기성용은 그라운드를 누비며 양 손을 두 귀에 대고 팬들의 더 큰 함성을 유도하는 골 뒤풀이를 했다. 텔레비전 중계를 하던 스카이스포츠의 닐 매켄은 “무에서 유를 창조한 놀라운 골(Wonder strike)”이라며 감탄했다.
셀틱은 후반 31분에 나온 상대 자책골과 후반 43분에 터진 찰리 멀그루의 쐐기골을 묶어 3-0으로 이겼다. 이 경기의 최우수선수(Man of the match)로 뽑힌 기성용은 스카이스포츠와의 현장 인터뷰에서 “리그 우승을 놓쳐 실망했다. 그러나 경기를 앞두고 선수들이 모여 팬들은 물론 우리들 자신을 위해 반드시 이겨 올 시즌을 우승과 함께 마치자고 다짐했다”고 털어놓았다.
기성용이 FA컵에서 보여준 맹활약은 스코틀랜드 무대에서의 성공적인 적응은 물론 유럽 빅 리그에서도 통할 선수라는 사실을 증명했다. 기성용이 국내 무대에서 활약할 때부터 관심을 보인 유럽의 축구 전문가들은 좋은 체격(1m87㎝·75㎏)과 힘, 기술과 시야 등 모든 것을 갖춘(Total package) 선수라며 그 가능성을 높이 평가했다.
그들의 판단은 틀리지 않았다. 셀틱으로 이적한 뒤 한동안은 적응에 애를 먹으며 벤치를 지키기도 했지만 지난해 10월 경쟁자인 스콧 브라운의 부상으로 찾아온 기회를 놓치지 않고 주전으로 떠올랐다. 닐 레넌 감독은 11월 14일 세인트 미렌과의 경기(1-0 셀틱 승)가 끝난 뒤 “기성용의 활약은 월드클래스다. 힘든 시간을 이겨낸 그의 인성도 매우 훌륭하다”고 칭찬했다. 치열했던 주전 경쟁에서 기성용이 승리했음을 증언한 것이다.
FA컵 결승전은 기성용의 화려한 다음 시즌을 예고한다. 스카이스포츠의 경기 분석 전문가로 셀틱 출신인 앤디 워커는 “기성용은 더욱 발전할 수 있는 선수라는 사실을 증명했다”고 평가했다.
셀틱은 1874년 시작된 FA컵에서 통산 35번째 우승을 차지했다. 2007년 이후 4년 만에 왕좌를 되찾았다. 당시 주장으로서 햄든파크에서 FA컵을 들어올린 닐 레넌은 감독으로서 우승하는 감격을 맛봤다. 4년 전 레넌 감독이 달았던 등번호(18번)를 지금 기성용이 달고 있다. 기성용은 주장 스콧 브라운과 함께 단상에 올라 트로피를 들어올렸다. 17세에 프로에 데뷔한 기성용의 첫 우승 트로피다.
