Cho Kwang-rae says no to KFA way

The Korea Football Association released the national team squad for the upcoming friendly matches next month amidst a dispute over player selection for the national and Olympic teams.

National team head coach Cho Kwang-rae announced the 27-man squad yesterday. The three goalkeepers, nine defenders, 12 midfielders and three forwards are slated to play in a friendly against Serbia on June 3 and Ghana on June 7.

Included on the list are Chunnam Dragons striker Ji Dong-won and Cerezo Osaka midfielder Kim Bo-kyung. Both are also part of the Olympic team, which has a friendly against Oman on June 1, and that has caused some friction between Cho and the KFA.

Two weeks ago, the KFA suggested that Cho let Ji and Kim play for the Olympic team and in exchange, Olympic team members Hong Jung-ho, Yoon Bitgaram and Kim Young-kwon would play for the national team.

But Cho said yesterday that having Ji and Kim on both teams was not a violation of FIFA rules and that player selection is a coach’s responsibility.

“I thought about leaving them off the list but since we don’t have time to test them before the World Cup Qualifier in September, I decided to keep them,” Cho said at a press conference. “But they’ll only play June 7.”

Ji and Kim will be joined by one new player and six returning national team members.

The new player is FC Seoul midfielder Koh Myong-jin, who is making his national team debut. Koh has played on the youth national and Olympic teams but has never played for the senior national team. He was with Anyang LG in 2003 when Cho was the manager.

“I’ve known Koh since his early days and I picked him because of his potential,” Cho said. “He is the key player in FC Seoul’s midfield and looks strong on the technical side as well.”

Returning to the national team are defenders Lee Jae-sung, Park Won-jae and Kim Jae-sung and midfielders Shin Hyung-min and Lee Seung-hyin. It’s the first time they’ll play for Cho.

AJ Auxerre striker Jung Jo-gook is also returning to the national team after scoring two goals in the French league this month. He hasn’t played an international since 2009.

Cho said that he will test his defensive line during the next two friendlies and said that Pohang defensive midfielder Kim Jae-sung will compete with Celtic’s Cha Du-ri for the right back position. Cho also said that he is looking for the right combination of center backs. While Lee Jung-soo will take one center back position, Hong Jung-ho, Hwang Jae-won and Lee Sang-duk will compete for the other.

조광래호, 지동원 등 27명 선발...고명진 첫 발탁
조광래 축구대표팀 감독이 총동원령을 내렸다.

조광래 감독은 23일 오전 종로구 신문로 축구회관 5층 대회의실에서 기자회견을 열고 6월 3일 세르비아, 7일 가나와 A매치에 출전할 국가대표 27명의 소집 명단을 발표했다.

이번 대표팀은 그 어느 때보다 정예 멤버로 구축됐다는 평가다.

손흥민을 제외했을 뿐 해외파를 모두 불러들였다. 국내 선수들도 검증된 선수들로 채웠다. 대표팀에 첫 발탁된 선수가 고명진 하나일 정도.

2014 브라질 월드컵 아시아 3차 예선을 앞두고 옥석 가리기에 나설 마지막 기회라고 판단한 조광래 감독의 승부수다.

대표팀 차출을 놓고 홍명보 올림픽대표팀 감독과 마찰을 빚었던 조광래 감독은 구단에서 차출을 반대한 지동원까지 선발할 정도로 최고의 선수들로 대표팀을 구성했다.

평가전 상대가 국제축구연맹(FIFA) 랭킹에서 한국(31위)보다 크게 앞선 세르비아(16위)와 가나(15위)라는 사실을 고려하면 대표팀 경쟁력을 키우는 데 큰 도움이 될 것이라는 판단이다.

해외파 12명 중 가장 눈길을 모으는 선수는 역시 정조국. 올 시즌 프랑스 무대에 진출한 정조국은 최근 시즌 2호골을 터트리며 2년 3개월 만에 대표팀에 복귀하는 데 성공했다.

국내파에서는 조광래호에 처음 발탁된 김재성 고명진 박원재 이승현 이재성 신형민 등이 눈에 띈다. 특히 고명진은 태극마크를 가슴에 처음 달았다. 조광래 감독은 고명진에게 `조커` 역할을 부여하겠다는 입장이다.

한편 조광래호는 오는 31일 낮 12시 파주 NFC에 모여 첫 훈련에 들어간다. 지동원은 6월 1일 오만과 올림픽대표팀 평가전에 출전한 뒤 2일 조광래호에 합류하게 된다.
