Spanish Embassy spouse rams cars

A Spanish man, identified as the spouse of an employee of the Spanish Embassy in Seoul, went on a traffic rampage with his vehicle last week as he drove into several cars, injuring several policemen in the process. Police would identify the 42-year-old man as C, who they said was married to a secretary at the Spanish Embassy. C told police that he had been under severe stress and a police official involved in the case said C appeared to be mentally ill. The police have not filed charges in the case, an official at Yongsan Police Precinct said yesterday.

According to the Yongsan District police, the man drove a Hyundai Veracruz SUV, which was registered to the embassy, out of the embassy quarters on May 15 and immediately hit a Kia Carnival minivan parked in front of the Iranian ambassador’s residence as well as a sentry post, injuring the officer who was standing guard. Following that, C crashed into a police car, injuring several officers inside. C then drove toward Itaewon, sideswiping four vehicles en route. He abandoned his car near the Hamilton Hotel and was later subdued by the police.
