Toms overhauls Wi to win Colonial by a shot

DALLAS - David Toms erased the bitter memory of his playoff loss at last week’s Players Championship when he clinched his 13th PGA Tour title by one shot at the Colonial Invitational on Sunday.

A stroke behind Korean Wi Chang-soo (Charlie Wi) going into the final round, Toms eagled the par-five 11th on his way to a 3-under-par 67 on a blustery day at Colonial Country Club.

The 44-year-old American shrugged off his only bogey of the round at the difficult 17th and safely parred the last for a 15-under total of 265.

Playing partner Wi, seeking his first victory on the U.S. circuit, briefly led by three strokes early in the final round but had to settle for second place after closing with a 69.

“That just took a lot of guts, that’s what I got by on today,” a beaming Toms said in a greenside interview after ending a five-year PGA Tour title drought by embracing his caddie.

“I played a great round of golf and Charlie played fantastic. He kept making putt after putt when he needed to. I feel so blessed. It’s a crazy game and I’m just so glad to be part of it.”

Toms, who had blown a seven-stroke lead in the previous round, said he had been energized after holing out from 82 yards to eagle the 11th where his ball pitched six feet past the pin before spinning back into the cup.

“When stuff like that happens, it’s like: ‘Yeah, it’s meant to be.’” he added. “I’ve wanted this tournament for a long time. It’s a great course for me and I’m just glad to have one of those plaid jackets,” he said, referring to the prized winner’s jacket at Colonial.

Toms, who had not previously won since the 2006 Sony Open in Hawaii, was beaten by Korean Choi Kyung-ju (K.J. Choi) at the first extra hole of last week’s Players Championship when he missed a par putt from inside four feet.

톰스와는 묘한 인연이다. 최경주는 지난주 톰스와 연장전 끝에 제5의 메이저대회로 평가받는 플레이어스 챔피언십에서 우승을 차지했다. 톰스는 선두를 달리다 최경주에게 공동선두를 내준 뒤 연장전에 끌려나갔다가 1.5m 파퍼트를 놓쳐 무릎을 꿇었다.
　
그 톰스가 1주 만에 패배를 딛고 이번에는 위창수를 상대로 역전승을 거두며 2006년 소니오픈 이후 5년 만의 우승과 통산 13승을 거두는 기쁨을 누렸다.
　
1타 차 선두로 4라운드를 시작한 위창수는 1, 2번 홀 연속 버디의 상승세를 이어가지 못하고 4, 6번 홀에서 잇따라 보기를 한 것이 추격의 빌미를 제공했다. 위창수의 실수를 기다리던 톰스는 7번 홀(파4)에서 버디를 잡은 데 이어 11번 홀(파5)에서 83야드를 남기고 세 번째 샷을 그대로 홀에 집어넣는 이글로 선두를 꿰찼다. 톰스는 14번 홀(파4)에서 4.5m짜리 버디 퍼트를 집어넣어 위창수와의 격차를 3타로 벌리며 우승에 한 발짝 더 다가섰다.
　
16번 홀(파3)에서 버디를 잡은 위창수는 톰스가 17번 홀(파4)에서 1타를 잃은 틈을 타 1타 차로 추격하며 마지막 반격을 노렸다.
　
그러나 위창수가 18번 홀(파4)에서 13m 넘는 거리에서 친 버디 퍼트가 홀 옆에 멈춰 서 파로 막아낸 톰스와의 연장 승부는 이뤄지지 않았다.
