In U.S., easing driver’s license rules for Koreans

Washington state in the United States will issue driver’s licenses to people holding Korean licenses with a simple eye test, waiving written and driving tests. Korea will do the same for people holding Washington licenses.

Seoul’s National Police Agency said yesterday it signed a deal with the Northwest state’s motor vehicle authority on Tuesday for reciprocal acknowledgement of driver’s licenses.

Washington is the third U.S. state to make such a deal with Korea after Maryland last December and Virginia last March.

The agreement is most practical for people moving from one place to the other, not just visiting.

A Korean license holder merely has to go to a Washington State Department of Licensing bureau and pass an eye test. The NPA said the deal only applies to licenses for passenger vehicles. The police said they’re trying to reach similar agreements with other U.S. states and other countries. “We expect such agreements to help Koreans swiftly settle in the countries they emigrate to,” an official of the NPA said.

Among the 30 major countries with significant Korean populations, 10 do not acknowledge Korean licenses.

경찰청-美워싱턴주 운전면허 상호인정
경찰청은 24일 미국 워싱턴주와 운전면허 상호인정에 관한 약정을 체결했다고 밝혔다.

이에 따라 한국과 워싱턴주에서 발급받은 18세 이상의 유효 운전면허증을 소지한 사람은 상대국에서 별도의 교육, 필기, 실기시험 없이 운전면허를 교환 발급받을 수 있다.

경찰청은 또 외교통상부와 공동으로 교민이 다수 거주하는 30개국 가운데 한국의 운전면허를 인정하지 않는 10개국, 미국 여타 주와 지속적으로 협정을 추진할 예정이다.

현재 한국과 운전면허 상호인정 협정을 체결한 국가는 9개국이며, 미국에서는 워싱턴주를 포함해 메릴랜드, 버지니아 등 3개 주와 약정을 체결했다.

경찰청 관계자는 "운전면허 상호 인정 체결로 교민의 현지 조기정착을 도모하고 양국간 ?교역과 투자를 촉진하는 데 이바지할 것으로 기대한다"고 말했다.
