Striking pieces of tradition reimagined

At his latest solo exhibition in Seoul, Korean contemporary artist Chun Kwang-young takes his famous “Aggregation” series a notch higher, giving dimension, color and scale to the works that made him famous internationally.

For more than three decades, Chun has been making a name for himself with bas-relief and sculptural compositions made of individual, triangular Styrofoam objects wrapped in hanji, or Korean mulberry paper.

The exhibition at Gallery Hyundai, in Sinsa-dong, southern Seoul, features around 45 works from the Aggregation series, including “Aggregation 09-SE056,” a grand, 3.5-meter (11.5-foot) sculpture.

The sculpture, covered in hanji triangles, looks like a cylinder ready to explode. The triangles increase in size toward the top of the cylinder, almost as if the cylinder has swollen up. This top-heaviness is balanced by hundreds of the same triangle forms scattered on the floor. The shape of the sculpture, according to the artist, represents the brain or head of a modern man in anguish.

Chun said that it took him close to five months to complete the work.

“I tried to blend a Western aesthetic with the use of very traditional Korean materials and methods,” Chun said, standing in front of the sculpture last Friday at Gallery Hyundai. “In the West, it’s common to box everything in, but in traditional Korean culture, the bojagi [Korean wrapping cloth] method is more prevalent,” Chun said.

It is this hybrid quality that brought Chun international recognition.

In creating the works for the Aggregation series, one of Chun’s goals was to use hanji in a new way. Much of the paper he used for the series is more than a century old, and for Chun, creating something new out of something that his ancestors once used and touched gave the work a whole new meaning.

“The fingerprints of numerous men and women from our past are all engraved onto these papers,” he said.

Besides this central piece, works like his “Aggregation 08-M002BLUE,” a bas-relief made with grey and brown hanji triangles, show the artist’s minimalist tendencies. In this work, the grey and brown triangles cover the canvas, making a three-dimensional backdrop while hollow craters create shape, in which one big pool colored in indigo blue, pops out against the simple, yet intricate background created by the artist.

“Chun’s work first appealed to me because of its Modernist simplicity, its reliance on the power of repetition and the grid to create mesmerizing surfaces that entranced my eyes,” wrote Harry Philbrick, director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Museum.

“Chun began to incorporate mulberry paper into his work, rooting his work in a material that resonated with him. Until then, Chun’s work had been grounded in the American and European practice of Abstract Expressionism following his graduate studies in Philadelphia.”

In “Aggregation 07-D122,” another bas-relief piece, color plays the main role. Red, yellow and orange triangles begin at their palest shade in the center of the piece and gradually become darker and darker toward the edge of the canvas, giving the work depth and volume.

It would have perhaps been easy for the artist to apply the color onto the triangles after placing them on the canvas. Chun said, however, that he dyed each triangle separately, using colors extracted from fruits and plants commonly used in traditional Korean dying techniques, including omija, or five-flavor berries, and persimmon.

“These dyes give the works a more organic and authentic feel. For many of the colors, there is no exact color name to match, because the mixtures are so unique,” said Chun.

On his new works, Chun said that although he is old in age, his worst fear is being trapped in his own mannerisms when it comes to the creative process.

“Yes, my career has been very successful and a lot of people, many I don’t even know, have bought my works. But I want to keep moving and discover other parts within my self.”
