F1 racers get ready to gamble in Monte Carlo

MONTE CARLO - Last year’s winner Mark Webber and 2008 victor Lewis Hamilton will be gambling on their skills and strategy to stop defending drivers’ champion Sebastian Vettel from winning the Monaco Grand Prix here this weekend.
Webber, 34, hit the jackpot last year when he won pole position and then came home first for Red Bull after a faultless lights-to-flag drive ahead of his 23-year-old teammate German Vettel.
That win was the first by an Australian in Formula One’s glamorous “showpiece” race for more than 50 years and catapulted him ahead of Jenson Button to the top of the drivers’ standings, setting the scene for a close and often bitter scrap with Vettel for the remainder of the year.
This time, it is very different, and not only because new rules and a new rubber supplier have introduced enforced, almost cosmetic, moves. The 2009 champion Button of McLaren is down in fourth with 61 points after five races and Webber, third, is ahead of him by just six points, 10 behind Button’s teammate and fellow-Englishman Hamilton, with 77 points.
But out in front, by a long distance, is Vettel, who has already chalked up 118 points to top the title chase after a quarter of this year’s scheduled calendar of 20 races, if the Bahrain Grand Prix, as many expect, is reinstated.
This means that Vettel, even if he fails to finish, will continue to lead the championship after Sunday’s contest around the twisting Monegasque harbor circuit. If he wins, he could be more than 70 points ahead of Webber, an advantage that may tempt many bookmakers to stop taking bets on the precocious wunderkind.
Webber, however, like Hamilton and Button, who also won the race on his way to the title, and two-time champion and two-time Monaco winner Spaniard Fernando Alonso is not prepared to countenance that kind of negativity at this early stage.

하지만 turn 10-11, 이른바 시케인으로 불리는 복합 코너 등 추월이 가능한 코스도 있어 흥미진진한 경기가 예상된다.
주목되는 선수는 역시 시즌 4승, 최근 3연승을 기록중인 베텔이다. 베텔은 지난 22일 스페인 GP에서 해밀턴의 거센 추격을 막아내며 ‘월드 챔피언`다운 실력을 보여줬다.
베텔에 맞설 대항마로는 마크 웨버(레드불), 젠슨 버튼, 루이스 해밀턴(이상 맥라렌)이 꼽힌다.
버튼과 웨버는 2009년, 2010년 모나코GP에서 폴투윈을 차지했다. 루이스 해밀턴도 2008년 모나코GP에서 우승한 바 있다.
