N. Korea’s Kim and his ‘first lady’ in chartreuse

Every detail about North Korean leader Kim Jong-il’s secretive trip to China was pored over by journalists and Pyongyang watchers, including the image of a lady in fluorescent green spotted in his entourage.
On the fifth day of Kim’s trip, the day before he departed for a meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing, the leader spent a day in Nanjing and toured a factory of Panda Electronics, a Chinese electronics manufacturer.
A Chinese bystander took video of Kim getting out of a car to tour the factory, and the middle-aged woman in green was seen getting out of a different door. The video was posted on the Internet on Tuesday.
South Korean intelligence sources believe there is a high chance that the woman in Nanjing was Kim Ok, Kim Jong-il’s unofficial “first lady.”
Kim Ok has served as Kim Jong-il’s personal secretary since the 1980s, and has been considered his fourth consort, following the death in 2004 of Ko Yong-hee, his previous consort and mother of three of Kim’s four acknowledged children: Kim Jong-chol, Kim Jong-un and Kim Yeo-jong.
North Korea analysts believe that Kim Ok became a mother figure to the three children, including Jong-un, Kim’s heir apparent.
The woman in green sported a similar hairstyle to the woman identified in pictures from North Korea’s official news agency last September as Kim Ok, following a Workers’ Party convention.
The group picture, which showed Kim Ok and Kim Jong-il’s youngest daughter in the front row of the meeting, convinced analysts of her growing power within the North Korean power elite.
A similar female companion was spotted in pictures from Kim Jong-il’s two previous trips to China in August and May 2010. At the time, that woman was thought to be a secretary because she was spotted behind attendants surrounding Kim Jong-il.
In Tuesday’s video footage, the woman in green was clearly riding in the back seat of the same luxury vehicle as Kim Jong-il.
“It would be difficult for someone other than the first lady or her equivalent to sit on the left back seat of a car being used by [Kim Jong-il],” a South Korean intelligence official told the JoongAng Ilbo.
Kim Ok accompanied Kim Jong-il to a summit with Chinese President Hu Jintao in 2006.
Other analysts believe that Kim Ok has gained more power in the inner circle by supporting the transfer of power to heir-apparent Kim Jong-un.

김정일의 여자로 알려진 김옥(47)이 북한 퍼스트레이디 역할을 위해 전면에 나섰는지 여부가 관심을 끌고 있다. 중국을 방문한 김정일 국방위원장의 옆을 그림자처럼 지키는 여성이 김옥이란 관측이 강하게 대두되고 있기 때문이다. 그녀가 김옥일 경우 외교무대에서 사실상 ‘영부인’ 역할을 하는 셈이 된다. 이 여성은 지난 20일 김정일의 첫 방문지인 헤이룽장(黑龍江)성 무단장(牧丹江)시의 홀리데이인 호텔에서 처음 목격됐다. 짙은 색 정장 차림의 50세 전후 여성이 김정일 차량 뒷좌석 왼편에 타는 모습이 포착되면서 김옥이 동행한 것이란 분석이 나왔다.
24일 난징(南京) 소재 전자업체인 판다그룹 건물에 도착할 때 이 여성의 모습은 더욱 또렷이 잡혔다. 연녹색 재킷 차림에 갈색 계열로 염색을 하고 짙은 화장을 한 상태였다. 누가 보더라도 한눈에 띄는 차림새다. 대북 정보 관계자는 “퍼스트레이디에 준하는 인물이 아니면 ‘국가원수급’ 의전 차량 뒷좌석 왼쪽에 위치하기 어렵고, 눈에 띄는 차림새도 불가능에 가깝다”며 당국이 그녀를 김옥일 가능성이 높은 것으로 판단하고 있다고 전했다.
지난해 5월과 8월 김정일의 방중 때도 김옥으로 추정되는 여성이 등장해 정보당국을 긴장시켰다. 하지만 장성택 국방위 부위원장을 비롯한 수행원보다 훨씬 뒷좌석에 앉는 등 김옥이라고 보기에 석연찮은 대목이 있었다고 한다. 김옥은 지난해 9월 후계자 김정은이 모습을 보인 노동당 대표자회 참석자 단체 사진에 등장했다. 이후엔 다시 공개석상에서 사라졌다. 김정일의 주요 방중 목적 중 하나가 북한 후계체제 안착이라는 점에서 김옥의 동행 여부는 더 주목된다. 2008년 8월 김정일이 건강 이상으로 쓰러져 병상 통치를 할 때 김정은 후계 구축에 김옥이 핵심적 역할을 했다는 관측이 있기 때문이다. 김정일이 말년에 ‘감춰진 여인’이던 김옥을 위한 배려 차원에서 공개석상에 모습을 드러내도록 한 것이란 분석도 있다.
