Football scandal probe widened

As prosecutors expanded the investigation into the K-League game-fixing scandal, more players were accused of taking part in the scam.

The Changwon District Prosecutors’ Office’s Special Branch Unit in South Gyeongsang said yesterday that the Changwon Disrtic Court issued arrest warrants for three more players from Daejoen Citizen FC, who allegedly helped their teammate, midfielder Park Sang-wook, 25, to deliberately lose a game after receiving about 10 million won ($1,280) each from Park.

Prosecutors suspect that Park distributed part of the 120 million won he received from gambling brokers to three players and asked them to deliberately lose a match on April 6 between Daejeon Citizen and Pohang Steelers, on which gambling brokers wagered large amounts of money. Daejeon lost 3-0.

Park was arrested last week on charges of receiving money from brokers to fix matches after receiving 120 million won from gambling brokers. Prosecutors believe the brokers, who were arrested, raked in illicit profits by winning bets on the thrown games.

Four more players from the same team were summoned for questioning on Saturday as Park gave prosecutors the names of seven teammates who he said he split the money with.

Prosecutors also said that they have summoned more players from Gwangju FC for questioning for alleged involvement in the scam by helping their goalkeeper Sung Kyung-mo, 31, who was also arrested last week under the same allegations as Park. Sung is reported to have told the club that he had returned the money to the brokers but prosecutors believe only a portion of the 100 million won that Sung received from the brokers was returned.

Although prosecutors are focusing their investigation on two K-League teams - Daejeon Citizen FC and Gwangju FC - they are expected to expand their investigation into all 16 teams of the football league, with rumors of an “existing blacklist” of players involved in the game-fixing scandal, according to media reports.

Military prosecutors yesterday sought an arrest warrant for former football striker Kim Dong-hyun, 27, who is suspected of being involved in the scandal and was questioned by state prosecutors on Thursday. Kim is currently serving in the Army.

The Korea Professional Football League announced its deepest regrets yesterday for letting down K-League fans and the public and said that it will conduct a “clean campaign” in every match, in an attempt to prevent a recurrence.

As part of the campaign, all players will line up before football matches and the captain, coach and director of each team, along with a K-League official, will lead the players in an “honest match” oath.

1억2000만원 받은 선수 “동료 7명과 나눠가졌다”

프로축구 승부조작 사건을 수사 중인 창원지검 특수부는 돈을 받고 승부를 조작한 혐의(국민체육진흥법 위반)로 대전시티즌의 신모(26·골키퍼)·양모(25·수비수)·김모(27·미드필더) 선수 등 3명을 29일 구속했다.

선수들은 4월 6일 열린 ‘러시앤 캐시컵 2011’ 대회의 포항 스틸러스전에서 패배하는 대가로 지난 26일 구속된 같은 팀 미드필더 박모(25·구속)씨로부터 1000만~4000만원씩 받은 혐의를 받고 있다. 이 경기에서 대전시티전은 0대3으로 졌다. 김기동 창원지법 영장전담 판사는 이날 영장실질심사 뒤 증거인멸 및 도주우려가 있다며 3명의 구속영장을 발부했다.

검찰은 대전시티즌 선수 가운데 27일 체포해 조사한 1명과 28일 오전 피의자 신분으로 소환한 3명을 같은 혐의로 불구속 입건한 뒤 돌려보냈다.

곽규홍 창원지검 차장검사는 “받은 돈의 액수와 승부조작 가담 정도가 구속 기준이 됐다”고 말했다.

앞서 검찰은 브로커 2명(구속)으로부터 승부조작 대가로 1억2000만원을 받은 혐의를 받고 있는 미드필더 박씨에 대한 수사에서 동료 선수 7명에게 경기가 끝난 뒤 돈을 나눠줬다는 진술을 확보했다.

검찰은 또 브로커와 연결해준 대가로 박 선수로부터 수천만원을 받은 혐의를 받고 있는 국가대표 출신 김동현(27·상주 상무) 선수에 대한 수사결과는 군 검찰에 이첩했다.

검찰은 브로커로부터 1억원을 받은 혐의로 구속된 성모(31) 선수가 소속했던 광주FC 구단 선수들에 대해서도 곧 소환조사할 계획이다. 검찰은 구속된 성 선수가 다른 구단 선수에게도 개별적으로 돈을 건넨 정황을 포착, 수사하는 것으로 알려졌다. 승부조작 가담 선수들이 자신이 뛰는 경기에 ‘토토식 복권’에 베팅했는지와 브로커 2명에게 돈을 댄 배후 여부, 구체적인 불법 베팅방법도 조사하고 있다.

한편 한국프로축구연맹은 31일과 6일 1일 이틀간 강원도 평창 한화리조트 휘닉스파크에서 16개 구단 선수와 코칭스태프, 사무국 임직원 등 관계자 1000여 명이 참석한 가운데 승부조작 사태로 인한 최근의 위기 상황에 대한 인식을 공유하고 대책을 마련하기 위한 워크숍을 열기로 했다.

전문가를 초청해 승부조작과 관련한 부정·불법행위의 재발을 막고 팬들의 신뢰를 회복하기 위한 방안을 마련할 계획이다. K-리그 선수단을 포함한 연맹 및 구단 관계자가 한자리에 모이는 것은 이번이 처음이다.
