Korean wins int’l English contest

A Korean student won a prestigious English-speaking contest in England last week.

Kang Jeon-wook, 18, a senior at the Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies in Yongin, beat 80 other competitors from 48 countries at the International Public Speaking Competition held by the U.K.-based English Speaking Union (ESU) on May 23-27 in London, according to ESU Korea yesterday.

It was the 30th year the annual international competition has been held but the first time a Korean student has competed, ESU Korea said.

“I just felt honored to participate in it and didn’t expect to win,” said Kang, humbly by telephone, upon arriving in Korea from the U.K. yesterday. He said he won thanks, in large part, to strong support from the international audience and the many other participants he got to know prior to the competition.

The ESU, founded in 1918 by Sir Evelyn Wrench to promote knowledge through the use of English, has Queen Elizabeth II among its royal patrons with her husband, the Duke of Edinburgh Prince Philip, serving as the president since 1957. Former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill once chaired the union.

The British education service organization has overseas branches in more than 50 countries, including the ESU Korea, which was founded in 2004.

The Korea JoongAng Daily began holding the ESU Korea Public Speaking Competition last year in December, which Kang won.

Kang, who is planning to study business in a U.S. college, said he will continue his interest in better knowing English and will continue honing his skills.

ESU Korea said the first-ever ESU Korea Tour will be held in July, when English-speaking experts from the U.K. will come to Korea to give lessons to Korean students. Kang will also talk about his experiences and know-how in meetings with students, it said.

18세 강전욱, 영국서 영어연설 최고상

국제 대중연설 대회 1위

전 세계 49개국 학생들이 영어 연설 실력을 겨루는 국제대회에서 영어가 모국어가 아닌 한국 고교생이 우승을 거머쥐었다. 강전욱(18·한국외국어대 부속 용인외고 3학년)군이 지난 27일 영국 런던에서 폐막한 제30회 ‘국제 대중연설 대회’(IPSU)에서 1위에 오른 것이다.

“음. 내가 가르칠 수 없다고?(Umm. I can’t teach?)”

강군이 이날 영어를 자연스럽게 구사하는 인도·호주·캐나다·뉴질랜드 등 영연방 국가나 프랑스·스웨덴 등 유럽 학생 등 81명 앞에서 이렇게 자신의 얘기를 영어로 시작했다. 그는 영어로 “대학 교수와 고교 교사인 부모의 영향으로 가르치는 일을 직업으로 삼는 게 당연하다고 생각했는데 가르치는 일이 내 적성이 아니란 생각이 들었다”고 말을 이었다. 그런 뒤 “진정으로 내가 하고 싶은 일을 찾아 직업으로 삼고 싶다”고 말했다.

이 대회는 전 세계적으로 권위를 인정받고 있는 영어 말하기 경연 대회다. 영어를 통해 중·고생들이 서로를 이해하는 능력을 키우자는 게 대회 취지다. 영국 여왕 엘리자베스 2세의 부군 필립 마운트배튼 에든버러 공이 회장으로 있는 비영리 교육기관(ESU·English Speaking Union)이 이 대회를 주관해 왔다. 대회 참가자들은 각국 예선을 거쳐 매년 영국 런던에 모인다. 예선 참가자만 4만여 명이다. 올해 본선 대회의 주제는 ‘말로는 충분하지 않다(Words are not enough)’. 이 화두를 가지고 학생들은 자신의 경험을 토대로 15분 정도 연설하는 게 대회 진행 방식이다.

강군은 본선 조별 경기, 준결승, 결승을 거쳤다. 특히 준결승에서는 특정 주제가 제시되면 즉석 연설을 해야 한다. 강군에겐 ‘여행은 가장 좋은 교육’(Travel as the best education)이란 주제가 주어졌다. 그는 지체 없이 “여행을 통해 사람들이 서로 경험을 나누면 고정관념과 편견이 사라질 것”이라는 요지로 즉석 연설을 했다. 결승에서는 인도·가나·몰도바 학생들과 연설 실력을 겨뤘다.

ESU 측 심사위원들은 결선에서 “(강군의) 표현이 자연스럽고, 공감할 수 있는 풍부한 사례를 들어 말한다”며 높은 점수를 줬다.

그는 중 2, 3년 때 미국 대학에서 교환교수 생활을 한 아버지(강현주 건국대 컴퓨터공학과 교수)를 따라 2년간 외국 경험을 했다. 강군은 “초등학교 때부터 영어 만화나 비디오를 즐겨 봤다”며 “가장 중요한 영어 공부법은 재미를 붙이는 것”이라고 말했다.

대회 우승자는 오는 11월 버킹엄궁에서 필립 공으로부터 직접 1등상을 받는다.
