Miami’s star power faces Nowitzki-led Mavericks

The Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks will square off in the NBA Finals starting Tuesday in a 2006 finals rematch that features two teams with reason to believe they can win the title.

The Heat have LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, while the Mavericks depend on star German forward Dirk Nowitzki and a solid group of supporting stars in what is expected to be an entertaining best-of-seven championship series.

Less than a year after Wade persuaded James and Bosh to come to South Beach, the Heat are living up to expectations by making it all the way to the showcase.

After a rocky start, the superstar trio has come a long way and the three are backed up by as good a supporting cast as Miami could afford under the salary cap.

“We had to go through a lot of adversity,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “That struggle that we went through in March, where we lost five straight, that helped us. As painful as it was, we had to go through that fire together to be able to gain the confidence where we could be successful now in the postseason.”

Miami will host games one and two on Tuesday and Thursday before the series shifts to Dallas. The Mavericks were the first team to reach the finals by beating Oklahoma City 100-96 on Wednesday in game five of their Western Conference semifinal series.

The Heat followed them a day later by defeating the Chicago Bulls 83-80 in game five of the Eastern final.

This is just the second postseason meeting between Miami and Dallas, the Heat having taken the first for the crown five years ago.

Dallas won both games against Miami during the regular season. Both contests took place in the first two months of the season.

The Mavericks are built around depth. They rely on Nowitzki for most of their scoring but their bench is deeper than Miami’s so who their number two scorer is usually depends on who has the hot hand on any particular night. “I like the team,” Nowitzki said. “I think we’re deep and we can play all sorts of styles. So, we’ll see what happens.”

Nowitzki said he’s not motivated by revenge for the 2006 finals loss.

“It doesn’t really matter that much to me,” Nowitzki said. “We had a huge chance in ’06 and let it slip away, so we’ve got another crack at it. You never know in this league if you ever get another chance, and we’re able to get to this stage again and it feels good.”

Dallas fell apart five years ago after jumping out to a 2-0 series lead and even leading game three by 13 points halfway through the fourth quarter.

“Obviously, it was one of the toughest losses we’ve gone through as a franchise,” Nowitzki said.

이번 경기는 두 특급 포워드가 만난다는 점에서 더욱 주목된다. 올 시즌 많은 비난을 뒤로 한 채 마이애미행을 택한 르브론 제임스는 신인때부터 무서운 존재감을 보였다. 2003년 클리블랜드에 입단하며 NBA에 데뷔한 제임스는 그해 신인왕을 거머쥐었고 2004~2005시즌부터 7년 연속 올스타에 선정되기도 했다. 그는 최근까지 농구판 최고 선수로 군림하며 마이클 조던의 후계자로 꼽히기도 해 '킹'이라는 칭호를 얻었다. 90년대 시카고 불스에서 활약했던 스카티 피펜은 최근 "진짜 농구황제는 조던이 아닌 마이애미 히트의 제임스"라는 극찬을 날리기도 했다. 또한 "조던은 가장 위대한 슈터지만 제임스는 가장 위대한 '선수'로 기억될 것"이라는 의미심장한 말을 남겨 논란을 가중시켰다. 제임스는 2006~2007시즌 파이널 진출 경험이 있지만 샌안토니오에 0-4로 주저앉아야 했다. 이런 패배를 맛 본 그이기에 이번 우승에 더욱 목이 마를 거란 추측이다. '킹'이란 별명은 있지만 지금껏 왕위에는 오른 적이 없던 제임스. 이번 파이널전에서 진짜 왕관을 쓸 수 있을지 주목된다.

대서양을 건너온 '독일 병정' 노비츠키는 1998년 댈러스를 통해 NBA에 발을 디뎠다. 노비츠키는 2006~2007시즌 유럽 선수 최초로 정규리그 MVP에 오르는 영애를 안았다. 그는 213cm의 장신임에도 불구, 내외곽 플레이에 모두 능한 클러치슈터다. 그런 그 역시 파이널전의 아픔이 있다. 2005~2006시즌 유일하게 올랐던 파이널에서 소속팀 댈러스가 마이애미에 2-4로 무너졌던 것. 어렵게 찾아온 파이널전과의 조우, 이번 기회를 통해 그는 과연 '해우'할 수 있을까.

한편 최근 미국 스포츠 전문 매체 ESPN을 통해 스포츠 전문가 22명이 이번 파이널전을 놓고 우승을 점쳐본 결과 15대 7로 마이애미에 힘이 쏠리고 있는 상황이다.
