Korea’s embassy in Tripoli moved to Tunisian island

Korea’s embassy in the Libyan capital of Tripoli has been temporarily moved to a Tunisian island amid escalating dangers from NATO airstrikes against the forces of Libyan leader Muammar el-Qaddafi, Seoul’s foreign ministry said yesterday.

“We relocated the embassy temporarily as the security situation in Tripoli is seriously deteriorating amid NATO’s airstrikes,” said a ministry official. “We plan to move the embassy back to Tripoli as soon as the situation in Libya improves.”

A total of 15 Koreans, including embassy staff, their families and other Korean residents in the strife-torn nation, took a three-hour land route to the small southern island of Djerba off Tunisia on Sunday, the official said.

“Ever since the international community imposed economic sanctions on Libya, there’s been a serious lack of daily necessities and fuel, forcing people to travel by bike,” the official said. “We decided that it would be difficult to keep our embassy in Libya with frequent cases of theft.”

Some 20 foreign missions currently remain open in Libya, including those from China, Russia and North Korea.

주리비아 한국대사관 튀니지로 임시이전

국경도시 제르바로…트리폴리 치안악화 우려

정부는 북대서양조약기구(나토)군의 공습이 계속되는 리비아 수도 트리폴리 내 한국대사관을 튀니지의 국경도시인 제르바로 옮겼다.

30일 외교통상부에 따르면 조대식 주리비아 대사를 포함한 대사관 직원 및 가족 11명과 교민 4명 등 15명은 전날 오후 1시께(현지시간) 트리폴리에서 육로로 3시간 거리인 제르바로 이동했다.

외교통상부 당국자는 "나토국의 공습으로 트리폴리 지역의 치안이 굉장히 악화되면서 대사관을 임시로 이전했다"면서 "리비아 정세가 어느 정도 안정이 되면 트리폴리에 복귀할 예정"이라고 밝혔다.

이 당국자는 "국제사회의 경제 제재조치로 리비아에서는 생필품, 유류부족 현상이 심각해 자전거로 이동해야 하는 상황"이라면서 "크고 작은 강도사건이 빈발하는 상황에서 리비아에서 공관을 유지하기 어렵다고 판단했다"고 말했다.

트리폴리에 주재하는 북한 대사관은 지난 9∼10일 나토군의 공습으로 건물이 파손되는 피해를 입은 바 있다.

대사관측은 앞으로 대우건설 트리폴리 지사와 제르바에 합동사무소를 설치한 뒤 리비아 정세 파악과 리비아진출 대책 수립 등의 업무를 수행할 예정이다.

대사관의 이전에 따라 현재 리비아에는 트리폴리 지역 16명, 벵가지를 비롯한 동부지역 6명 등 모두 22명의 국민이 체류하고 있다.

이들 가운데 7명의 자영업자는 정부로부터 체류허가를 받지 않은 상태라고 외교부는 전했다.

리비아에는 현재 중국, 러시아, 헝가리, 필리핀, 북한 등의 20여개 공관이 잔류하고 있다.
