Daesung hits cyclist who was lying in lane of bridge

Daesung, a singer in the popular boy band Big Bang, ran over a motorcyclist lying in a lane of the Yanghwa Bridge at 1:30 a.m. yesterday. The motorcyclist was later declared dead, but police aren’t sure whether Daesung killed him or whether he was dead before being hit.

According to police, Daesung, 22, was driving his Audi at 80 kilometers (50 miles) per hour on the southern exit of Yanghwa Bridge, Seoul, and ran over a man lying bleeding in the lane. His motorcycle was next to him.

“I felt something beneath my car and stepped on the brake, but it didn’t work,” Daesung told police yesterday, according to the police.

After running over the man, Daesung’s car rammed into a taxi stopped 40 meters ahead in the same lane.

“The driver of the Audi didn’t see the man lying in the lane and kept driving,” Jang Deok-mun, director for the traffic investigation unit of Yeongdeungpo police, told reporters yesterday, “So the car ran over the man and then smashed the taxi in front of it.” Police said Daesung passed a Breathalyzer test.

According to police, Daesung said he immediately got out of his car to see if the taxi driver was hurt, but he wasn’t injured badly.

The taxi driver had earlier swerved to avoid the body in the road, and then stopped his car to investigate.

Police couldn’t say whether the motorcyclist was dead before being run over by Daesung. His motorcycle was propped up against the divider separating the southern and northern lanes of the bridge, suggesting that someone else had been at the scene and moved the motorcycle.

“We will launch a joint investigation with the Road Traffic Authority,” said Jeong Seung-taek, senior director for Yeongdeungpo police.

Police added that Daesung violated the speed regulation on the bridge, which is a maximum of 60 kilometers per hour.

Five policemen of Yeongdeungpo Police Precinct launched an on-site investigation yesterday at the scene of the accident.

“The [details of the accident] will be known after conducting an on-site investigation and an autopsy led by National Forensic Service,” a police official said.

대성, 교통사고로 경찰 입건…오토바이 운전자 사망

빅뱅 대성(22·본명 강대성)이 교통사고 혐의로 경찰에 입건됐다.

대성은 31일 새벽 1시 40분께 서울 양화대교 남단에서 승용차를 몰고 가다 교통사고를 냈다. 서울 영등포경찰서 교통사고 조사반은 "대성씨는 이날 양화대교 남단 끝부분에 정차해있던 택시를 뒤에서 들이받았다. 대성씨가 운전한 차량은 택시 외에도 앞서 쓰러져 있던 오토바이 운전사 현모(30)씨를 들이받은 것으로 추정되고 있다"고 밝혔다.

이어 "오토바이 운전자는 사망했으나 대성씨의 차량에 의한 사망인지 이전에 선행사고로 인한 건지 여부는 조사 중"이라면서 "대성씨는 음주운전은 하지 않은 것으로 확인됐다"고 전했다.

대성은 사고 직후 택시기사 김모(44)씨와 함께 5시간 동안 경찰 조사를 받은 후 오전 7시께 귀가했다. 이날 택시 운전기사 김씨는 경찰 조사에서 "오토바이 운전사가 1차로에 피를 흘리고 있는 상태였다. 이를 확인한 후 119에 신고하려고 차를 급정거했다"며 "이에 대성씨가 추돌사고를 낸 것"이라고 전했다. 대성은 경찰 조사에서 피를 흘리고 쓰러져 있던 오토바이 운전사를 미처 보지 못했다고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.

교통사고 조사반 측은 "담당 경찰과 오토바이 운전사 유가족 측이 함께 현장 조사를 나갔다"며 "정확한 수사를 위해 사고 현장 인근에 설치돼 있던 CCTV를 확보해 조사를 펼치고 있다"고 설명했다.

대성의 소속사 YG엔터테인먼트 측은 "대성은 교통사고 후 큰 충격에 빠져있다. 경찰 조사를 받으면서 많이 울었고 현재까지 놀라있는 상태"라면서 "매니저와 함께 숙소에 있다. 오늘(31일) 스케줄은 없다. 경찰의 처분에 따를 것"이라고 밝혔다.
