Shaq announces his retirement plans on Twitter

BOSTON - Shaquille O’Neal, a 15-time All-Star who struggled to get on the court last season because of injuries, tweeted today that he is going to retire after a 19-year career in which he won four titles and the 2000 league Most Valuable Player award.

O’Neal wrote on Twitter: “im retiring.” It included a link to a 16-second video in which he says, “We did it; 19 years, baby. Thank you very much. That’s why I’m telling you first: I’m about to retire. Love you. Talk to you soon.”

An inveterate prankster who gave himself a new nickname - or several - in each of his six NBA cities, O’Neal did not notify the Boston Celtics, his latest team, of his plans. He played just 37 games this year, the first of a two-year deal, making just three brief appearances after Feb. 1.

“To my knowledge, he has not informed any of us that he’s retiring,” Celtics spokesman Jeff Twiss said.

If he goes, O’Neal retires fifth all-time with 28,596 points, 12th with 13,099 rebounds and a .582 field goal percentage that is second only to Artis Gilmore among players with more than 2,000 baskets. His free throw percentage of .527 - well, now is not the time to dwell on that.

“I’m a little bit sad,” said Pat Riley, the Heat president who was also the coach when O’Neal won a title in Miami. “It’s the end of an absolute 20-year career. Great, great player. .?.?. The league’s going to miss Shaq. I’m sure Shaq will do something big and beyond.”

O’Neal’s contributions to basketball went far beyond his presence on the court. One of the most charismatic players in NBA history, O’Neal was a franchise-saver when the Orlando Magic made him the No. 1 overall pick in the 1992 draft. He took them from the lottery to the playoffs in two years, and then led them to the NBA finals in his third year before they were swept by the Houston Rockets.

O’Neal, 39, signed with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1996 and had his greatest success there, winning three titles with Kobe Bryant and coach Phil Jackson. But amid tension between O’Neal and Bryant after a loss to the Detroit Pistons in the finals, O’Neal was traded to the Heat in 2004.

After three and a half years in Miami, a tenure that included his fourth NBA championship, O’Neal became a veteran-for-hire, moving to Phoenix and then Cleveland and finally Boston. But he couldn’t deliver another title for Steve Nash and Amare Stoudemire with the Suns, with LeBron James with the Cavaliers or with the Celtics’ Big Three of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. “What a career for Shaq Diesel!!” James wrote on Twitter. “The most dominating force to ever play the game. Great person to be around as well. Comedy all the time!!”

He embraced social networking, amassing almost 4 million followers on his Twitter account, where fans could find out his next move or even the “random acts of Shaqness” - like sitting in Harvard Square, pretending to be a statue, or going out in drag on Halloween.

‘공룡센터’ 샤킬 오닐(39ㆍ보스턴 셀틱스)이 농구코트를 떠난다.

오닐은 1일(현지시간) 소셜 네트워크 리얼타임 동영상 ‘타우트(Tout)’를 통해 “선수생활 19년 동안 정말 즐거웠다. 팬들에게 가장 먼저 고맙다는 인사를 하고 싶어 이렇게 소셜 네트워크로 작별을 고한다. 여러분과 곧 다시 만나게 될 날이 올 것”이라며 은퇴를 알렸다. 공식 은퇴기자회견은 3일 가질 예정이다.

NBA에서 가장 유머 넘치는 선수로 꼽히는 그는 “한 번 비즈니스맨은 영원한 비즈니스맨이다. 이 정도면 내가 소셜 미디어의 황제라고 불려도 되지 않냐”라고 농도 던졌다. 그의 전ㆍ현 팀 동료들은 트위터를 통해 아쉬움을 표했다. “오닐은 명예의 전당에 오를 선수다. 그와 같은 선수는 두 번 다시 나오지 않을 것(라잔 론도)” “샤크 디젤! 농구 역사상 가장 압도적인 코트 장악력을 가진 선수이자 최고의 코미디언(르브론 제임스)” 등 NBA 선수들의 트위터가 온통 오닐 소식으로 도배됐다.

레이커스의 제리 버스 구단주는 “오닐이 없었다면 우리의 3연속 우승도 없었다. 평생 고마워할 일”이라고 했고, 히트 시절 그를 지도했던 히트 사장 팻 라일리는 “오닐의 은퇴소식에 슬픔을 느낀다. 20년 동안 정말 대단한 선수였는데…. NBA가 그를 많이 그리워할 것”이라고 말했다.

NBA에서 19년 동안 2만8596득점을 쓸어담은 오닐은 통산득점 5위에 올라있다. 아티스 길모어에 이어 2000개의 바스켓을 성공시켜 야투 성공률 58.2% 이상을 기록한 역대 두 번째 선수로 기록됐다.

지난해 보스턴과 계약기간 2년에 사인한 오닐은 주로 부상자 명단에서 시간을 보냈다. 지난해 크리스마스 때 오른 아킬레스 건에 부상을 입은 이후 정규시즌서 2경기만 뛰었다. 친정팀 마이애미와 동부 컨퍼런스 준결승 3차전에 컴백하며 8분여 동안 뛰었지만 4차전에선 3분을 뛴 뒤 아킬레스 건 부상 재발로 시즌을 접어야 했다.

오닐은 출전을 강행하려 했지만 담당의사가 완강히 반대했다. 오닐은 “당시 매일 트레드밀에서 뛰었다. 또 매일 밤 수영장에서 재활훈련을 했다”라며 끝내 보스턴을 도와주지 못한 사실을 안타까워 했다.

셀틱스는 올 시즌 오닐이 20분 이상 뛰었을 때 21승4패로 호성적이었다. 오닐은 “만약 내가 부상당하지 않았더라면 우승도 가능했다. 더군다나 LA, 샌안토니오와 같은 강팀들이 조기탈락해 우리에겐 절호의 기회였다. 하지만 난 ‘만약’이란 말을 믿지 않는다”며 “대니 에인지 보스턴 단장이 나를 대신할 젊은 피를 찾을 것”이라고 말했다.

오닐은 다음 시즌 복귀도 염두해 뒀지만 담당의사가 수술을 권유해 은퇴를 결정했다고 밝혔다. “다시 코트에서 뛰고 싶은 마음이 굴뚝 같았지만 수술을 받는다면 회복하는 데 9개월은 족히 걸린다. 보스턴에 2년 연속 민폐를 끼치고 싶지는 않았다.”

오닐은 NBA 여느 선수보다도 가외활동이 활발했던 것으로도 주목을 받았다. 백만장 이상의 앨범판매를 자랑하는 힙합 아티스트로서 큰 인기를 누렸고, 영화배우로도 맹위를 떨쳤다. 또 자선사업에도 앞장서는 모범적인 모습도 보였다. 오닐은 “사람들을 기쁘게 해주고 싶었다. 동시에 재미도 느끼고 싶었다. 둘 다 성취한 것 같다”며 웃었다.

오닐은 1992년 드래프트에서 전체 1번으로 올랜도 매직에 지명됐다. 바닥에서 맴돌던 매직을 2년 만에 플레이오프에 진출시키더니 3년째에는 페니 하더웨이와 콤비를 이루며 마이클 조던이 이끄는 시카고 불스를 격파하고 NBA 파이널에 오르는 이변을 연출했다. 하지만 휴스턴 로키츠에 싹쓸이패로 무릎을 꿇었다.

그의 전성시대는 1996년 LA 레이커스와 사인하며 활짝 열렸다. 필 잭슨 감독의 지도 아래 코비 브라이언트와 함께 3연속 우승(2000-2002)을 일궈냈다. 그러나 팀내 1인자를 열망한 코비와 불화로 2004년 디트로이트와 파이널 시리즈서 패한 뒤 마이애미로 트레이드됐다.

오닐은 2006년에 또 다른 수퍼가드 드웨인 웨이드와 히트의 창단 첫 번째이자 자신의 네 번째 우승 트로피를 거머쥐는 데 성공했다. 이후 그는 피닉스-클리블랜드-보스턴 등 줄곧 우승후보 팀으로 이적했지만 끝내 다섯 번째 우승반지는 끼지 못했다. 그의 앙숙인 코비보다 1개 적다.

오닐이 NBA에 남긴 기록은 너무나 많아 일일이 나열하기 힘들 정도다. 올스타 15회 선정ㆍ13시즌 평균 20점 10리바운드 이상 올린 유일한 선수ㆍ2000년 정규시즌 MVPㆍ2000~2002년 3연속 NBA 파이널 MVP 등이 대표적이다.
