Park, Lee dine and talk GNP crisis

The ruling Grand National Party must put its priority on improving the livelihoods of the people, not just politics, and strive for the unity of its members in order to regain the public trust, former GNP Chairwoman Park Geun-hye said in a meeting yesterday with President Lee Myung-bak.

Park pledged to take a role in revamping the party’s image in the politically crucial year ahead of legislative and presidential elections.

In a rare meeting between the two conservative leaders, the future of the ruling party and its plummeting popularity in the aftermath of the April by-election defeats were discussed along with other issues.

Lee and Park had a luncheon at the Blue House with their aides and then a separate one-on-one talk for an additional 55 minutes. Park, the daughter of former president and strongman Park Chung Hee, is considered one of the party’s most likely presidential candidates in 2012.

While the Blue House was tight-lipped about the meeting, Park briefed reporters afterward about her discussion with Lee.

“I have told the president that the GNP is in a crisis now, but the party is making efforts to be reborn,” she said. “What’s important is the direction and the standard [of the reform]. I told the president that the party’s priority must be the livelihoods of the people, not the politics, and we must unite to win back the people’s trust. I promised that I will do my best for the party and the country.”

According to Park, Lee expressed his support for her determination to overhaul the GNP.

“The party must make genuine efforts before the people,” Lee was quoted as saying by Park. “It is promising that the party is discussing this issue actively.”

The most significant discussions took place in Lee and Park’s private talk after the luncheon. It was the first one-on-one meeting between Lee and Park in 10 months.

Asked if the two leaders discussed the factionalism between Lee and Park loyalists in the GNP, Park replied, “Isn’t it inappropriate to mention pro-Lee and pro-Park?”

“The party must unite within a bigger framework, and we must do our best,” Park said. “I will play my role on my own.” She did not elaborate on specific plans on how she will contribute to the party’s overhaul.

According to Park, she proposed Lee pay more attention to the basic economic issues that affect the people, pointing to inflation and rising housing prices, along with snowballing household debt.

“I told Lee that the economic index looks good, but the people are not feeling it, and that is a serious problem,” she said. “President Lee replied that he will make the working class’ economic issues the focus of his government.”

According to Park, Lee also expressed interest in the tuition issue.

Park said she and Lee discussed North Korean issues for a significant amount of time, but declined to elaborate. “The government will soon explain about this,” she said.

이명박 대통령과 한나라당 박근혜 전 대표가 3일 낮 청와대에서 55분간 단독회동을 가졌다.

이 대통령의 특사로 유럽 3개국을 방문했던 박 전 대표의 특사활동 방문성과를 보고받기 위해 마련된 이날 회동에서는 민생 문제가 중점적으로 논의됐다.

이 대통령과 박 전 대표의 회동은 작년 8월21일 이후 10개월 만에 이뤄진 것이다.

박근혜 전 대표는 "(한나라당은) 정치 논리보다는 민생에 초점을 둬야 하고 분열보다는 통합으로 가야 한다"며 "모두가 하나가 돼 민생문제를 해결하고 국민신뢰를 얻기 위한 노력을 열심히 해야 된다고 생각한다"고 건의했다고 회동 후 의원회관에서 기자들에게 직접 설명했다.

박 전 대표는 "그런 선상에서 저도 당과 나라를 위해 최선을 다하겠다"고 말했으며, 이 대통령은 "꼭 그렇게 힘써달라"면서 "당도 무엇보다 국민 앞에 진정성 있는 노력을 하는 게 중요하다"고 강조했다.

박 전 대표는 "진정성 있게 민생문제를 해결하도록 노력해 국민으로부터 인정을 받아야 신뢰회복의 길도 열리고 지지를 호소할 수 있지 않겠는가"라고 말했고, 이 대통령은 "물론이다"라고 공감을 표시한 뒤 "그런 노력을 해달라"고 당부했다.

박 전 대표가 국민이 경기지표를 잘 체감하지 못한다고 지적하며 "성장의 온기가 일반 국민 모두에게 골고루 와닿을 수 있도록 이끌어주셨으면 한다"고 건의하자, 이 대통령은 "앞으로 국정의 중심을 서민과 민생, 그리고 저소득층 중심에 두겠다"고 말했다.

특히 이 대통령은 "내수를 어떻게 활성화시키는가에 관심을 갖고 앞으로 잘 챙길 것"이라고 밝혔다.

회동에서는 남북한 비밀접촉을 포함한 북한 문제에 대한 대화도 오갔으나 박 전 대표는 "정부가 조만간 북한 상황과 관련해 국민에게 설명을 하게될 것 같다"며 구체적으로 언급하지 않았다.

그는 "친이, 친박에 대한 언급이 있었는가"라는 기자들의 질문에는 "우리가 민생과 신뢰를 위해 하나가 돼야 한다는 말에 다 들어 있다. 친이, 친박 그런 말이 나오면 안되지 않겠느냐"고 당내 통합의 중요성을 부각시켰다.

자신의 `역할론`에 대해서는 "제 나름대로 해나가면 된다"면서 "구체적으로 말할 수는 없지만 당직이 아니더라도 제 나름대로 할 수 있다"라고 답해 향후 본격적인 활동을 시사했다.

이 대통령은 단독회동에 앞서 박 전 대표와의 오찬회동에서 지난 4월28일-5월8일 네덜란드와 포르투갈, 그리스 등 유럽3개국 특사 활동 결과를 보고받았다.

이 자리에는 박 전 대표를 수행했던 한나라당 권영세 권경석 이학재 이정현 의원과, 청와대에서 임태희 대통령실장, 정진석 정무수석, 천영우 외교안보수석, 홍상표 홍보수석이 참석했다.
