North sinks any summit chance

북한이 이명박 정부를 향해 강력한 정치적 공격을 퍼부었다. 이명박 대통령과 김정일 국방위원장의 회담을 성사시키기 위해 최근 중국에서 가진 비밀접촉에서 남한의 고위 관료 3명이 뇌물을 주면서 정상회담을 “구걸”했다고 북한은 주장했다.

북한의 폭로에 동요된 청와대는 어제 국가안보 참모들을 긴급 소집해 대책회의를 가졌다.
The Ministry of Unification said that the North’s statement was a “great exaggeration” and denied that any bribes or dates for summits were offered. “There is no need for the South Korean government to respond to every little thing the North said,” the Unification Ministry’s spokesman Chun Hae-sung said yesterday in an official statement.
통일부는 북한의 성명은 “심하게 과장”된 것이고 뇌물을 주지 않았으며 정상회담 날짜도 제시하지 않았다고 말했다. 어제 발표한 공식 성명에서 천해성 통일부 대변인은 “북한 주장에 남한정부가 일일이 대응할 필요를 느끼지 않는다”고 말했다.
A statement released by the Korean Central News Agency quoted an unnamed spokesperson of North Korea’s National Defense Commission saying representatives of the two sides met secretly in Beijing more than once starting May 9 and that South Korean officials offered an envelope full of cash for summit talks to be held in late June, August and March 2012.

북한의 조선중앙통신은 익명의 북한 국방위원회 대변인을 인용해 남북 양측 대표들이 5월 9일 이후 한차례 이상 베이징에서 비밀 접촉을 했으며 남한 관료들이 돈봉투를 주면서 남북 정상회담을 6월 하순, 8월, 내년 3월에 개최해달라고 요청했다고 보도했다.
The statement said the three Seoul officials who offered the money were Kim Tae-hyo, deputy national security adviser to President Lee; Kim Chun-sig, director of the policy bureau at the Unification Ministry; and Hong Chang-hwa, a director of the National Intelligence Service.
성명에 따르면 돈봉투를 제시한 남한 관료 3명은 김태효 청와대 대외전략비서관, 김천식 통일부 정책실장, 홍창화 국가정보원 국장이다.
The three officials named in the statement turned off their phones immediately after it was released and were unreachable for comment. As of yesterday evening, no official statement was released from the presidential office, and a Blue House official said the Unification Ministry would handle the issue.

성명에 언급된 남한 관료 3명은 보도가 나온 뒤 바로 전화기를 꺼놓아 연락이 닿지 않았다. 어제 저녁까지 청와대에서는 어떠한 공식 성명도 내놓지 않았다. 청와대 한 관계자는 통일부가 이 문제를 다룰 것이라고 말했다.
