Aussie geisha seeks new status

SYDNEY - An Australian who became Japan’s first Western geisha is determined to continue in her role despite being told she cannot operate independently as she is a foreigner, a report said Monday.

Fiona Graham, known in Japan as Sayuki, said she had asked Tokyo’s Asakusa Geisha Association if she could become independent after the “mother” of her geisha house became too ill to continue in that role.

“I asked the geisha association, given the circumstances of my mother, if they would allow me to become independent in December,” she told The Australian newspaper. “I was told very directly that the reason I couldn’t have tenure was because I was a foreigner.”

She denied reports that she had split with the professional association but admitted her current status was unclear.

Britain’s Sunday Telegraph reported that Graham had quit the body after being accused of breaking the customs of the geisha world by failing to attend music and dance classes and focussing too heavily on self-promotion.

Graham said she had the strong support of some geisha sisters from both Asakusa and other districts and would continue in her chosen profession.

But Graham, who joined the ancient and secretive world of the geisha in 2007, said the rejection stung.

“Being the first white geisha was the hardest thing I have had to do,” said Graham, who went to Japan as a 15-year-old exchange student and attended high school and university there before completing a doctorate at Oxford in England.

“I have worked very, very hard, so it’s a very hard thing when the geisha association would not allow me to become independent solely because I am a foreigner.”

외국인 게이샤 피오나 그레이엄, 자격증 따놓고 자격박탈

최초의 외국인 게이샤 피오나 그레이엄(47)이 결국 게이샤 자격을 박탈당했다.

영국 데일리메일은 6월 5일 "400년 게이샤 역사 최초 외국인 게이샤 였던 호주 출신 피오나 그레이엄이 게이샤 협회로부터 자격을 박탈당했다"고 보도했다.

그레이엄은 15세 때 일본에 교환학생으로 유학을 와 게이오 대학을 졸업한 뒤 영국 옥스포드 대학에 진학해 사회인류학 박사 학위를 따냈다. 그러나 게이샤 문화에 매료된 그녀는 일본으로 돌아와 게이샤 양성과정을 등록했고 엄격한 수련 끝에 2007년 사유키라는 이름을 부여받고 외국인으로 최초로 게이샤 자격증을 취득했다.

그러나 아사쿠사 게이샤 협회는 그레이엄이 전통을 거부하고 음악, 춤 수업에 빠졌으며 자기 시간을 많이 가졌기 때문에 손님 앞에서 공연할 기회를 주지 않았다. 협회 측에 따르면 그레이엄은 게이샤로서는 할 수 없는 당황스러운 일들을 했다고 밝혔다.

또 협회는 히스테릭해진 그레이엄이 사람들에게 소리를 질렀다며 윗사람의 말에도 복종하지 않았다고 주장했다. 이런 행동은 게이샤 방식에 어긋나는 것이라고 전했다.

아사쿠사 게이샤 협회는 그레이엄이 떠나도록 강요한 것을 부정하지는 않았지만 대변인 케이지 치바는 그녀의 해고에 관련된 코멘트를 거부했다. 그레이엄 역시 자신에게 불리한 주장들에 대해 입장을 밝히는 것을 거절했다.
