An emotional end to Ronaldo’s outstanding career

SAO PAULO, Brazil - Ronaldo’s career with Brazil’s national team came to an emotional end as he was given a send-off during Tuesday’s friendly game against Romania.

The striker made a cameo appearance in the game from the 30th minute until halftime, when he was honored in a ceremony that recognized his contribution to the Selecao.

Brazil won the match - its last before the Copa America - 1-0, with Frederico “Fred” Chaves Guedes scoring in the first half.

The 34-year-old Ronaldo retired in February after an 18-year career. The three-time FIFA Player of the Year represented Brazil in four World Cups - winning two of them - and remains the competition’s all-time leading scorer with 15 goals. Only Pele scored more goals for Brazil than Ronaldo.

Players from both teams lined up near the sideline and applauded Ronaldo as he left the field at halftime. Visibly moved, he put the Brazilian flag on his back and with the ball in his hand, went around saluting the fans that packed the Pacaembu stadium. There were banners remembering the matches in which he scored each of his 15 World Cup goals.

“Thank you for all that you have done for me throughout my career,’’ Ronaldo said, addressing the supporters from the pitch. “Thank you for having accepted me the way I am, for having cried when I cried and for having smiled when I smiled.’’

Fans loudly chanted the striker’s name as he went into the locker rooms one last time.

“Brazil thanks Ronaldo,’’ read a banner held by fans.

“There is only one Ronaldo,’’ read another.

Fred opened the scoring from close range in the 20th minute after a pass by Neymar, then celebrated with his index finger raised, mimicking Ronaldo’s trademark goal celebration.

Ronaldo then replaced Fred, who bowed to Ronaldo before leaving the field.

The crowd cheered loudly every time the former striker touched the ball, and he nearly scored in the 35th after Neymar found him free from any markers in front of the net but he was unable to finish from close range.

Still out of shape, he missed another good chance in the 40th minute, scooping a shot from near the penalty spot and sending it way over the crossbar. Neymar set up Ronaldo again in the two minutes before halftime, but his low shot was saved.

“I had three chances, but in an ironic twist of fate I couldn’t score in my final match,’’ Ronaldo told fans. “It would have been a small retribution for all that you have done for me.’’

It was the first time Ronaldo played along with young sensation Neymar, who is touted as his replacement on the national team. Ronaldo said this week that the Santos player has the potential to be a star for Brazil when it hosts the 2014 World Cup. Tuesday’s match marked the end of the career of a player considered as one of the greatest Brazilian strikers of all time. He scored 67 goals in 104 matches in the yellow shirt, behind only Pele’s 95 goals.

브라질의 '축구황제' 호나우두(35)가 공식 은퇴경기까지 마치고 마침내 그라운드를 떠났다.

호나우두는 브라질 국가대표팀의 일원으로 8일(한국시간) 브라질 상파울루 파카엥부 경기장에서 열린 루마니아와의 친선경기에서 1-0으로 앞선 전반 30분 프레드가 빠지면서 그라운드에 투입돼 15분여 동안 뛰었다.

호나우두가 브라질 대표팀 유니폼을 입은 것은 2006년 독일 월드컵 이후 5년 만이고, 현역 선수로 그라운드를 누빈 마지막 순간이기도 했다.

브라질축구협회는 지난 2월 공식 은퇴를 선언한 호나우두를 위해 이번 루마니아와의 평가전에서 그의 은퇴식을 마련했다.

등번호 9번을 달고 전반 종료 때까지 뛴 호나우두는 동료의 집중 패스와 루마니아 선수들의 느슨한 수비 덕에 세 차례 결정적인 기회를 잡았지만, 득점에 성공하지는 못했다.

호나우두는 하프타임에 브라질 국기를 등에 두르고 그라운드를 돌면서 기립박수를 보내는 팬들에게 감사 인사를 전했다.

호날두는 "세 번 정도 찬스가 있었는데 이게 무슨 운명의 장난인지 마지막 경기에서 골을 넣지 못했다"면서 "선수 생활 내내 나와 함께 울고 웃어준 모든 분께 감사드린다"고 말했다.

경기장 곳곳에는 '브라질은 호나우두에게 고마워하고 있다', '오직 호나우두뿐이다'라는 내용의 문구가 적힌 플래카드가 걸렸다.

팬들은 경기가 끝나고 호나우두가 라커룸으로 들어갈 때까지 이름을 연호하면서 축구영웅과의 작별을 아쉬워했다.

1993년 자국 클럽 크루제이루에서 프로 선수로 첫발을 내디딘 호나우두는 이후 PSV에인트호벤(네덜란드), 바르셀로나(스페인), 인테르 밀란(이탈리아), 레알 마드리드(스페인), AC밀란(이탈리아) 등 유럽 명문팀을 두루 거쳐 2009년 브라질의 코린치안스에 몸담았다.

18년간 현역 선수로 뛰며 월드컵에서 두 차례 우승했고, 세 번이나 국제축구연맹(FIFA) '올해의 선수'로 뽑혔다.

월드컵 본선 무대에서는 통산 15골을 넣어 최다 골 부문 1위에 올라 있다.

1994년부터 2006년까지 브라질 국가대표로 뛰면서 이번 루마니아전까지 포함해 98경기에 출전해 62골을 터트렸다.

한편, 이날 브라질은 전반 20분 터진 프레드의 결승골로 루마니아에 1-0으로 이겼다.
