Indie culture center branches out to Nonsan

There is a wealth of cultural spaces in Seoul, but few outside of the capital region. There are even fewer spaces devoted to indie art.

That will change when the multipurpose culture hall Sangsang Madang opens a new branch in Nonsan, a city 180 kilometers (112 miles) south of the city, this coming Wednesday.

The opening of the space is part of a larger project launched by the organization to bring indie culture to areas outside of Seoul.

“Nonsan is famous for its military training center, but is an area of cultural isolation,” a representative of Sangsang Madang said. “We chose Nonsan as our first location outside of Seoul because we want to reach culturally secluded areas first.”

The center will open with a ceremony featuring performances by Shin Garam Band, DryFlower, Clinch and other indie bands.

The center will also launch its first exhibition, “The World’s Great Picture Book Exhibition.”

The first Sangsang Madang was opened by KT&G in September 2007 in the lively area near Hongik University in Mapo District, western Seoul, as a venue for art exhibitions, concerts, independent films and more. It has since become the nexus of indie culture in the neighborhood, which is known as a center of independent arts and culture in Seoul.

Attracting an average of 600,000 people every year, Sangsang Madang Hongdae contains a movie theater, concert hall, gallery, studio, lecture room, art shop and cafe.

Building on that success, and the growing interest in indie culture in Korea, the second center in Nonsan will have similar facilities including a gallery, media room, lecture room, studio, cafe and concert hall. The center will have space for up to 150 people.

The cultural center will support concerts by indie bands, art and photo exhibitions, film screenings and more. It will also offer a variety of classes on the humanities, photography, music and art.

Construction on the space began last July at an abandoned school in Nonsan.

In the coming years, KT&G expects to open other centers in Busan, Daegu, Jeonju and Gapyeong.

Lim Jin-mo, a pop music critic, said that the center’s expansion could also serve to broaden appreciation for arts and culture within the general public.

“It will be noteworthy to see how the expansion of indie culture will mix with our current culture and how it will increase the possibilities for cultural growth,” Lim said.

홍대 앞 ‘인디 밴드’ 논산 폐교 달군다

‘상상마당 논산’ 내달 개관

서울 홍익대 주변은 한국 인디 문화의 분만실이다. 음악·미술·디자인·사진 등 다양한 장르에서 인디 아티스트를 꿈꾸는 무수한 젊은이들이 이곳으로 몰려든다. 홍대 둘레엔 그런 인디 예술의 집결지로 여겨지는 곳이 있다. 마포구 서교동 367-5번지. 홍대 앞 ‘주차장 골목’에 자리 잡은 복합문화공간 ‘상상마당’이다.

상상마당은 2007년 9월 문을 열었다. KT&G가 홍대 앞 인디 문화를 지원하기 위해 마련한 공간이다. 영화관·라이브 공연장·갤러리·디자인숍·카페 등 다양한 문화 시설이 들어차 있다. 개관 3년여 만에 홍대 인디 문화를 이끄는 중심지로 떠올랐다. 해마다 평균 60만 명이 이곳에서 인디 예술을 체험한다. 아마추어 작가들이 전시회를 열고, 실력파 인디 밴드와 독립 영화를 발굴하는 데도 힘을 쏟고 있다.

인디 문화는 한 나라의 문화적 성과를 가늠하는 토대라는 점에서 주목을 끈다. 자본으로부터 독립적인 인디 문화에서 예술의 본바탕인 상상력이 무한대로 발산된다. 다채로운 문화적 실험이 펼쳐지고, 그 가운데 일부는 메이저 무대에서도 주목을 받는다. 따지고 보면, 비디오 아티스트 백남준도 맨 처음엔 인디 예술가였다. 그러나 인디 문화의 한계는 또렷하다. 장르의 폭은 넓지만, 향유할 수 있는 공간은 좁다. 한국에서 인디 문화를 체험할 수 있는 곳은 고작해야 홍대 앞뿐이다. 자본이 부족한 인디 예술의 특성상 좁은 곳에 모여서 서로 교류할 수밖에 없는 탓이다. 인디 문화에서 도농(都農) 간 ‘컬처 디바이드(Culture Divide·문화 격차)’가 더욱 심화될 수밖에 없는 이유다.

홍대 앞 상상마당이 인디 문화의 지역 확산을 위해 나섰다. 다음달 15일 충남 논산에 ‘KT&G 상상마당 논산’을 개관한다. 인디 예술 공간으로는 처음으로 홍대 주변을 벗어난 지역에 문화 공간을 짓는다. 인디 문화의 지방 분권화를 시도하는 첫걸음이다.

상상마당의 지방 프로젝트는 1년 전부터 추진됐다. 지난해 7월 논산시 상월면의 한 폐교(구 한천초교)를 사들여 문화 공간으로 탈바꿈시키는 작업을 진행해왔다. 상상마당 관계자는 “논산은 군사 지역이라는 특성 때문에 문화적으로 낙후됐다는 이미지가 강한 곳이다. 문화 소외 지역에 인디 문화를 확산한다는 취지에 따라 논산을 그 첫 지역으로 택했다”고 설명했다.

논산 상상마당에는 갤러리·미디어실·강의실·스튜디오·카페·공연시설 등이 들어선다. 가족 단위 관람객을 위해 약 150명을 수용할 수 있는 숙박 시설도 마련했다. 서울 상상마당과 비슷한 방식으로 인디 밴드의 공연, 인디 아티스트의 그림·사진 전시회 등이 매주 펼쳐지게 된다. 특히 지역 주민과의 문화 격차를 줄이기 위해 인문학·사진·음악·미술 등 다양한 문화 강좌도 함께 마련한다. 개관 행사로는 ‘세계 우수 그림책 특별전’과 인디밴드 신가람밴드·드라이플라워·클린치 등의 공연이 펼쳐질 예정이다.

상상마당 측은 논산을 시작으로 부산·대구·전주·가평 등으로 지방 프로젝트를 확산할 계획이다. 대중음악평론가 임진모씨는 “인디 문화의 지역 확산은 문화 격차를 효과적으로 줄이고, 우리 문화의 성장 가능성을 높인다는 점에서 주목할 만하다”고 말했다.
