Latest toll in match-fixing: 12 footballers

Prosecutors handling the K-League match-fixing scandal said yesterday they have charged 12 football players along with two brokers for involvement in the scandal, creating a stir in the country’s sporting world.

Kwak Kyu-hong, an assistant prosecutor general at the Changwon Prosecutors’ Office, said yesterday during the interim investigation report that “the prosecutors managed so far to charge 14 people involved in the recent match-fixing scandal.”

Prosecutors launched an investigation immediately after obtaining intelligence in early May that some K-League game results were manipulated after brokers allegedly paid players to lose matches so the brokers could make money betting on the games. Prosecutors said two brokers wagered 190 million ($175,400) won on the fixed games after bribing players and made an illegal profit of 620 million won in dividends.

Prosecutors said that among the 10 arrested players, eight of them are from the Daejeon Citizen FC, including Park Sang-wook, a 25-year-old midfielder who was arrested first for receiving 120 million won from brokers to fix the result of a match. Gwangju FC goalkeeper Sung Kyung-mo, 31, was also arrested along with Park, triggering further investigation of other team members. Sung is accused of receiving 100 million won from the brokers.

The seven other players from Daejeon Citizen FC are accused of helping Park throw a match against the Pohang Steelers on April 6 after receiving about 10 million won each from Park, said prosecutors. Daejeon lost 3-0.

After investigating a video clip of the game, prosecutors said they judged that the players did not play aggressively and intentionally kicked the ball to miss the goal and explained that defenders from Daejeon Citizen FC only pretended to take the ball from Pohang Steelers strikers.

Prosecutors said they have also arrested 35-year-old Pohang Steelers midfielder Kim Jung-kyum for wagering money on the game between his team and Daejeon Citizen FC upon hearing about the planned match-fixing. Kim was kicked off the club. Moreover, prosecutors said they were able to track two people who are suspected of providing 280 million won to the two arrested brokers to bribe players but the two reportedly fled, fearing threats from a gang. Prosecutors said one of the brokers was in a close relationship with a gang, and suspect the gang’s involvement in the scandal. But prosecutors said they have not yet found direct evidence.

9일 프로축구 승부조작 사건의 중간수사 결과를 발표한 곽규홍 창원지검 차장검사는 “지난해 몇 경기만 확인했는데도 K-리그의 정규 2경기와 컵 대회 1경기 등 3경기에서 승부조작이 이뤄진 혐의를 추가 확인했다”고 말했다. 검찰은 10억원 이상 베팅 금액이 몰려 발매가 중단된 이들 3경기도 이번에 적발된 승부조작 브로커와 관련이 있는 것으로 보고 수사하고 있다.

　검찰은 이날 4월 6일 러시앤 캐시컵 경기의 승부조작에 총 18명이 가담한 사실(사기·국민체육진흥법 위반)을 밝혀냈다. 7명을 구속 기소, 7명을 불구속 기소, 2명을 기소중지, 1명을 군검찰 이첩(구속)했다. 1명은 공소권 없음(사망) 처분했다.

　검찰은 수사에서 브로커 2명(구속 기소) 중 조직폭력배 김모(27)씨가 승부조작을 기획하고 실행에 옮긴 ‘몸통’으로 파악했다. 브로커들은 김동현(27·상주 상무·구속) 선수 소개로 대전 시티즌 박모(25·구속·미드필더) 선수와 자살한 정종관(30·서울 유나이티드) 선수를 끌어들였다.

　박 선수는 브로커에게 받은 1억2000만원을 동료 3명과 1100만~4000만원씩 나눠 가졌다. 이들은 4월 6일 포항(0대3 대전 패배)과의 경기에서 수비 시늉만 하거나 고의 파울로 퇴장당하는 등 승부조작에 가담했다.

　정종관 선수는 광주FC 성모(31·구속) 선수를 브로커에게 연결했다. 광주FC 성 선수가 받은 1억원 가운데 2000만원은 자신이 챙기고, 나머지 8000만원을 정종관·김동현 선수에게 준 것으로 드러났다. 그가 같은 팀 동료에게 준 사실은 확인하지 못했다.

　불구속된 이모(29)·곽모(32)씨 등 전주(錢主) 2명은 선수 매수자금 2억8000만원을 브로커에게 건넸으나 두 경기의 발매금액이 10억원을 넘어 베팅하지 못하자 승부조작 사실을 검찰에 제보했다.

　승부조작에 가담한 대전 시티즌 김모(27·미드필더·구속) 선수는 자신이 뛴 경기의 토토복권 1600만원을 구매해 2820만원의 배당금을, 포항 스틸러스 김정겸(35) 선수는 1000만원어치를 구매해 2800만원의 배당금을 받은 혐의다. 브로커 김씨와 공범인 조직폭력배 김모(29·수배)씨 등 2명은 대전-포항 경기 등에 1억9000만원어치 토토복권을 구입해 6억2000만원의 배당금을 받았다.

　브로커들은 복권방 업주 10여 명을 동원해 복권 발매기간 이틀 동안 수천만원씩 최고 1억9000만원을 베팅하기도 했다. 복권방 업주들은 승부조작 사실을 알고 복권 구매를 도왔다는 확증이 없어 처벌받지 않았다.
