Big bienvenue for K-pop idols

PARIS - The Korean Wave has stretched beyond Asia and reached the heart of Europe.

On Wednesday evening, members of three popular Korean pop groups landed at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris for a concert and were met by over 1,500 teenage fans from France, England, Italy and Sweden. The teens surged to get a look at 10 singers as they came through customs, and French police had to escort the performers safely to a van outside.

수요일 저녁(현지시각) 파리 드골 공항에 공연을 위해 한국 아이돌 그룹들이 도착하자 프랑스, 영국, 이탈리아, 스웨덴에서 온 1천5백 여명의 10대 팬들이 이들을 환영했다. 세관을 통관하는 한국 아이돌 가수 10명을 보기 위해 한류 팬들이 몰려들었고, 프랑스 경찰들은 한국 가수들을 안전하게 외부에 있는 밴까지 호위해야 했다.
The performers were from the groups TVXQ, SHINee and f(x), and many fans wept upon seeing them. “I can’t believe I saw the faces of SHINee members with my own two eyes,” said a teenage girl wiping tears away.

이날 도착한 한국 아이돌 그룹은 동방신기, 샤이니와 에프엑스였고, 많은 팬들은 이들을 보고 눈물을 흘렸다. 한 10대 소녀는 눈물을 닦으며 “내 두 눈으로 샤이니 멤버들의 얼굴을 보았다는 게 믿기지 않아요.”라고 말했다.
To maintain order, over 50 local police officers were deployed. Fans started gathering at the airport at 2 p.m., hours ahead of the stars’ arrival at 7:30 p.m. “Hundreds of fans flocking to the airport is a common scene upon the arrival of a celebrity,” said an airport policeman. “But I’ve never seen such a large number of fans turning up at Charles de Gaulle.”

질서를 유지하기 위해 현지 경찰 50여 명이 배치됐다. 한류 스타들이 도착할 예정 시간인 오후 7시30분보다 몇 시간 앞선 오후 2시부터 공항에 팬들이 모이기 시작했다. 한 공항 경찰관은 “유명 연예인이 도착할 때 수백 명의 팬들이 공항에 모이는 것은 흔히 있는 일이다. 그러나 드골 공항에 이처럼 많은 팬들이 모인 것을 본 것은 처음이다.”고 말했다.
Most of the fans were female, and they arrived at the airport carrying posters of the performers with messages written in Hangul, and even Korean flags. Some fans camped out in a corner of the airport arrival hall and sang favorite songs by the groups, such as SHINee’s “Ring Ding Dong” and Girls’ Generation’s “Gee,” and mimicked their dance moves.

대부분이 여성인 한류 팬들은 한글로 환영문구를 써넣은 아이돌 그룹들의 포스터들을 들고 공항에 도착했다. 심지어는 태극기를 들고 나타난 팬들도 있었다. 어떤 팬들은 공항 도착 홀 구석에 진을 치고서 샤이니의 ‘링딩동’과 소녀시대의 ‘지’ 등 좋아하는 그룹의 노래를 부르며 댄스 동작을 흉내냈다.
Most of the fans at the airport were reported to be members of Korean Connection, which is a club for K-pop aficionados. A 14-year-old fan said, “The thought of meeting the singers kept me up all night.” A 65-year-old fan said proudly, “I only watch Korean dramas and listen to Korean music at home.”

환영 인파의 대부분은 한국 대중가요 동호회인 ‘코리안 커넥션’의 회원이었다. 한 14세 팬은 “가수들을 만난다는 생각에 잠도 제대로 자지 못했다”고 말했다. 한 65세 팬은 “나는 집에서 한국 노래만 듣고 한국 드라마만 본다”고 자랑스럽게 말했다.
